Prior to an address from U.S. Chief Justice John Roberts on Tuesday evening, Middlebury College President Ronald Liebowitz announced the establishment of a professorship.
The Justice William H. Rehnquist Professorship of American History and Culture was awarded to history professor James Ralph, Jr. whose research focuses on the civil rights movement. Ralph published a book in 1993, "Northern Protest: Martin Luther King Jr., Chicago and the Civil Rights Movement."
During his half-hour address to the audience, made up largely of students, Roberts spoke of Rehnquist and the legacy he left behind when he died still serving in the U.S. Supreme Court.
Roberts was invited to the college to deliver the annual Fulton Lecture in the Liberal Arts, an engagement Rehnquist undertook in 1998.
