HANCOCK — A 13-year-old Barre teenager was killed Monday in a two-car accident on Route 100, according to Vermont State Police.

While police refused to name the girl, funeral directors at Day Funeral Home in Randolph identified teenager as Shawna Linn Brown.

Brown was a passenger in a car driven by Sammy Jo Wood, 18, of Granville. Police said Wood was driving south on a clear stretch of the two-lane highway when she veered into the northbound lane and struck another car driven by James Kibble, 53, of Kitchener, Ontario.

Wood and Kibble only suffered minor injuries in the crash. But Brown, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt was ejected from the car and later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said Brown was handing a piece of paper to Wood just before the crash. Alcohol and speed did not appear to be factors in the accident, which police said remains under investigation. No charges have been filed against Wood.

Brown, the daughter of Anthony Brown of Granville and Rebekka Ward of Barre, had just finished the seventh grade at Barre Town Middle School. She enjoyed fishing, boating, horseback riding, computers, bicycle riding swimming and music.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Day Funeral Home. Contributions in her memory may be made to the Valley Rescue, PO Box 131, Rochester, VT 05767.
