Vermont defeats Quebec

QUEBEC CITY, Que. — The Vermont Frost Heaves bolted to a 22-2 lead, extended the margin to 63-31 at halftime, then held off a Quebec rally to defeat the Kebekwa 103-88 at the Pavillion de la Jeunesse on Saturday night in an American Basketball Association contest.

"It was an interesting game," Vermont coach Will Voigt said. "We played about as well as we can play the game of basketball for a half. Defensively, they (Vermont) was incredible. It was 38-17 after they (Quebec) hit a 3 at the buzzer at the end of the first quarter."

Quebec went on a 25-4 run in the third to narrow the gap but was unable to earn a lead.

Antonio Burks led the Frost Heaves (15-3) with 27 points, including seven three-pointers, three of them in the final minutes after the hosts had pulled to within 12 points. Terrance Green and Markus Austin each added 16 points for Vermont, while Dokun Akingbade contributed 12 and Dwayne Lee 11.

Charles Fortier poured in 30 for the Kebs, whose record dropped to 6-11. Quebec City shot just 27.3 percent from the field for the game.

Vermont will make a midweek trip to Halifax to play the Rainmen on Wednesday and Thursday, in games that will take the place of two road dates lost when the Strong Island Sound suspended operations last month. The Frost Heaves return home for a 4:05 p.m. matinee with the Manchester Millrats on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Burlington's Memorial Auditorium. All kids 14 and under who wear a basketball jersey of any type will be admitted at the door for half-price.

The following day, also at Memorial, the Montreal Royal visit for a 2:05 p.m. tip. The Burlington High School boys varsity team will lead a food drive for the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, so fans are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to donate.
