BELLOWS FALLS — Bellows Falls police are investigating an explosion late Tuesday night in a woman's car, which sprayed the woman with liquid and metal shards.

Bellows Falls Police Chief Ronald Lake said the explosive device, a so-called "works bomb" had been placed in the woman's car, and when she was on her way home from work late Tuesday night, there was an explosion.

The explosion occurred at the intersection of Atkinson and School streets, he said, a short distance from the woman's place of work.

The woman was not seriously hurt, and she drove home and called police.

"It could have been pretty serious. She was scared right to death," said Lake, noting that instructions for making such bombs are on the popular video Web site, YouTube.com.

Lake said police found a second, unexploded soda-bottle bomb in the woman's car and they called in the Vermont State Police ordinance team to deactivate it.

Police are asking anyone with information about the incident should call Lake or Sgt. David Bemis at 463-1234.
