A day care center that served some of the Rutland area's most needy families before a recent downtown flood closed the facility has found a temporary home at the Mountain View Community in Rutland.
The Rutland County Parent Child Center's day care under the Unitarian Universalist Church in Rutland has been closed since a torrential downpour on June 14 turned the downstairs day care into a swamp of floating toys, mats and furniture — all items the center is seeking public help replacing.
The center, which cares for 20 children, has been struggling to serve its predominantly low-income clients since the storm.
But this week, officials at the Mountain View Community School at 261 North Church St. announced they will play temporary hosts to the center.
"Mountain View's Board of Directors, teachers and parents all felt it was the neighborly thing to do and have approached the Parent Child Center about offering their location as a gesture of good will," Mountain View officials wrote in a press release.
The day care center, which opened at the school on Monday, will stay at Mountain View until July 11, the center's director said Thursday.
The Mountain View Community School is a nonaffiliated independent school serving children 2-1/2 to 10 years old. The school opened 20 years ago with its offerings of preschool, school age and outreach activities.
