A fire that killed a Monkton man July 20 was the result of a lightning strike, fire investigators have determined.

Richard Bigue, 66, died in the fire at 344 Mountain Road. Charles Bigue, 42, and Dorothy Adams, 28, escaped from the home without injury.

The State Police Fire Investigation Unit determined that lightning struck the back side of the house, setting it ablaze, according to a Vermont State Police statement.

Police never considered the fire suspicious, but called the investigation unit after an immediate cause could not be determined.

The home was destroyed in the fire, police said. Fire crews from Monkton, Bristol, Hinesburg and Starksboro responded to the blaze.
