BURLINGTON — A new national survey ranks New Hampshire second — behind Iowa — and Vermont fourth — behind Alaska — in the amount of debt students pile up getting through college.

The Project on Student Debt says that after four years of college, the average Iowa student graduates with $26,208 in debt. In New Hampshire, the figure is $25,211; Alaska’s is $24,970 and Vermont’s is $24,329.

There’s concern in Vermont that student debt loads may prompt young people to leave the state. Some find it easier to pay a $300 or $400 monthly student loan bill with the higher salaries they can earn in New York or Boston.

Underlying college costs are cited as the cause. They jumped 6 percent at Vermont’s public colleges from 2006 to 2007.

No Dumb Joe Bradley,

A bailout for all student loans, past and present would make too much sense.
A bailout for paying off all current student loans would be easy enough.
A larger sort of student loan bailout would reimburse any individual who ever
took out a student loan, and adjusting that amount for inflation. This would also make lots of sense. A bailout for all student loans, paying off current loans and reimbursing ALL past student loans would cost about $200 Billion to 300 Billion dollars. That hypothetical $200 to $300 Billion dollars would then quickly make its way back into the economy. Instead, we, the taxpayers, will be footing the bill for some sizable Wall Street Christmas bonuses. What ? Didn't you read ? There has thus far been ZERO tranparency for the Wall Street bailout, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT THE CRYPTO-FASCISTS PAULSON AND BERNANKE WANTED IN THE FIRST PLACE !!!!

Don't worry. I think a bailout for defaulted student loans is, currently, being discussed (along with defaulted credit card debt).
