WESTMINSTER — Bad weather was blamed in part for an accident on I-91 Sunday that seriously injured two people from Newbury and closed the southbound lanes of the highway for hours, according to Vermont State Police.

In the midst of a snowstorm Sunday afternoon, a 2000 GMC Sierra truck driven by Janet Klark, 53, of Newbury, spun out of the separated highway's northbound lane, rolled across the median and came to rest in the southbound lanes.

State Police described the wounds to Janet Klark and 60-year-old John Klark, who was a passenger in the truck, as serious. Janet Klark, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck during the accident. John Klark was trapped inside the wreck and had to be extracted by emergency crews.

The Klarks were taken to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Their conditions weren't clear on Monday — a spokeswoman for the hospital said there was no record that John Klark was ever admitted to the hospital and Janet Klark's condition was not released at her family's request.

State Police at the Rockingham barracks could not be reached for additional comment Monday evening.

A statement issued by police earlier in the day said witnesses told police that the Klarks' truck began "fishtailing" in the snow-covered northbound lane, before spinning around backward and launching airborne into the median.

As the truck rolled across the median, several vehicles in the southbound lane swerved to get out of the way including one car that lost control and rolled into the median.

Any witnesses to the accident are asked to call Senior Trooper Jeremy Peters at 875-2112.
