The Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association has named Mick Wong of Hartford football and Courtney Rohrig of Black River soccer as the state's male and female Athletes of the Month for October.
Wong, a senior running back and linebacker, led the Hurricanes on a 5-0 run through October. Despite limited action due to a few lopsided scores, Wong rushed 78 times for 573 yards (114.6 yards-a-game average) with seven touchdowns.
In Hartford's 30-20 victory over South Burlington in the Division I semifinals on Oct. 31, Wong rushed for 170 yards and two 4-yard touchdowns. The previous week, he surpassed the 1,000-yard mark for the season with 112 yards on 10 carries in a 34-0 win over Burlington.
Other highlights for the month included a three-touchdown, 141-yard effort in a 25-7 victory over Rutland on Oct. 3 and two touchdowns — one on a 63-yard interception return — in a 35-7 victory over St. Johnsbury on Oct. 10.
Wong won the VSSA honor by edging football players Connor Beerworth of Rutland, Zach Dessureau of Springfield, Devin Rhodes of Brattleboro Union, and Brian Wilcox of Mount Mansfield Union; and soccer players Jordan Hepburn of U-32, Scott Hayford of Twin Valley, Ryan Hahn of Castleton State and Tyler Macnee of Middlebury College.
Rohrig, one of the all-time-leading scorers in Vermont high school girls soccer, continued her record-setting performances with 18 goals during the month of October, along with five assists, as she helped deliver Black River to the state championship game (which the Presidents won on Nov. 1).
Rohrig finished her career with 132 goals and 40 assists and is believed to be the second-highest-goal-scoring girl in Vermont history. Rohrig, a team captain, was a big part of the Presidents going undefeated, winning the Marble Valley League title and claiming three straight Division IV state championships.
Rohrig was selected during October as the top Vermont High School Female Athlete by the Wendy's Heisman program. She also was nominated for the Player of the Year Award by Gatorade and is an All-New England candidate. Rohrig was selected by her soccer team as the 2008 Best All Around Athlete and she was a unanimous selection for the Marble Valley League team and the Vermont Soccer Coaches Association Division IV All-State team for the fourth year in a row.
Rohrig is a strong student (3.68 GPA), a member of the school band, student council and is active in community projects with young and disadvantaged kids.
Rohrig won the VSSA award by edging the other female nominees: cross country runner Hannah Rowe of St. Johnsbury Academy; soccer players Mikayla Forsey of BFA-Fairfax, Stephanie Jaques of Burlington, Brittany Pfaff of Rice Memorial; field hockey players Kori Huffman of Brattleboro, Carolyn Griggs of Castleton State, Chase Delano of Middlebury College; and horseback rider Hailey Perlee of New Haven.
