The Rutland City Fire Department and Department of Public Works are asking city residents to help them dig out the city's fire hydrants.
Chief Robert Schlachter said Monday that, if people are physically able, cleaning the snow away from hydrants in front of their homes or businesses would be a great aid to the fire department.
"It's going to save us a great deal of time should there be a fire," he said.
While Paul Clifford, commissioner of the Department of Public Works, said crews from his department are tending to the hydrants as they continue snow removal and cleanup in the next few days, with more than 600 hydrants in the city it's a substantial task.
