Lisle grabs 22 rebounds to lead Chiefs

In Chester, Green Mountain's 6-foot-1 Emma Lisle did it all in leading the Green Mountain girls basketball team to a 41-34 victory over Twinfield in the consolation game Green Mountain's holiday tourney Tuesday night.

Lisle led the 4-1 Chieftains with 12 points, 22 rebounds, six blocked shots, five assists and five steals.

"They cut the lead down with three minutes left, but then we closed it with an 8-1 run," Green Mountain coach Terry Farrell said.

Chelsea Hawkins had some key baskets for the Chiefs during that spurt.

Betsy Martin led the Trojans with 11 points.

Green Mountain figures to get a good test Monday at West Rutland.

Twin Valley took the championship game 53-35. Tarryn Bolognani fired in 25 points with six rebounds and six steals to show the way for the 6-0 Wildcats. Sister Jessica Bolognani chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds, while Devon Spirka added six points and nine boards.

Amanda Martin led Thetford with 10 points.



Essex 35, Hartford 26

In Essex, the Hurricanes gave powerful Essex a scare.

"Our kids played unbelievable defense tonight," Hartford coach Steve Landon said.

Hartford had the lead much of the way, but the Hornets made their free throws down the stretch.

Renee Denison had 11 points to lead Hartford.

Nakita Wilson had seven points and Brooke Nott six to lead Hartford.

Hartford, 2-4, hosts Randolph on Friday night. Essex travels to South Burlington on Saturday.



Arlington 64, Woodstock 29

Meaghan Phelps poured in 22 points and Haley Van Orman and Amber Alford contributed 12 and 11, respectively, to propel the Eagles past 2-3 Woodstock. Leading Woodstock was Jerrica Breault with eight points.

"We played well. We bounced back from our game against Burr and Burton which wasn't pretty," Arlington coach Jeff Corey said.

That was likely some of their motivation for coming out strong as the Eagles built a 22-5 lead by the end of the first quarter.

The Wasps host South Royalton on Saturday and 2-2 Arlington hosts Black River on Friday.



Chelsea 54, Rochester 39

In Chelsea, a one-sided second quarter led the 3-2 Raiders past Rochester.

In that second quarter, Chelsea went on a 15-2 run in which they used strong rebounding to distance the gap between the teams.

Taylor Fuller scored 12 points for the 3-3 Rockets.

Rochester will next be in action when they host the Twinfield Trojans on Friday.



GIRLS BASKETBALL

West Rutland 70,

Rochester 63

In Rochester, the West Rutland Golden Horde broke open a game that was deadlocked at 30-30 at the break with a strong second half to continue their winning ways.

Katie Lincoln pumped in 26 points to lead the Horde, while Brooke Griswold 13 and Emily Sumner added 13.

Daley Crowley led the Rockets with 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Caitlin Cutting chipped in 13 points and six steals. Rochester fell to 3-3.

The Rockets take on the 5-1 Horde a week from Saturday in West Rutland.



Burr and Burton 60,

Fair Haven 43

In Fair Haven, Burr and Burton used its defense to control the championship game of the Mary Canfield Holiday Tournament.

The Slaters found it hard to get open shots off throughout the game, and when they were able to get a shot off, the Bulldogs controlled the backboards, minimizing any second chances.

The 7-0 Bulldog offense was led by Jenna Hoffman who scored 15 points and Tyler Johnson and Logan Cavanaugh both put up 10 points.

For the Slaters, Devyn Reed scored 18 points and Amanda Howard added eight.

The girls named to the all-tournament team were Jennifer Loyer of Mount Abraham, Kristy Pinkham of Otter Valley, Howard and Reed of Fair Haven, and Hoffman and Abby Marsh of Burr and Burton. Marsh was named the tournament's most valuable player.

The 4-1 Slaters will next be in action when they travel to Otter Valley on Friday.



BOYS BASKETBALL

Leland & Gray 60,

Green Mountain 58

In Chester, the Leland & Gray Rebels could not stand prosperity in the consolation game of Green Mountain's tournament. The Rebels had a double-digit lead with 1:30 left and nearly gave it all away.

"My guys decided to make it interesting," Leland & Gray coach Paul Paytas said.

Matt Bizon led the Rebels with 15 points. He was joined in double figueres by Chris Marcucci and Tyler Russell with 13 each and Colin Nystrom with 10.

Green Mountain's Alex Munro led all scorers with 25 and teammate Alex Holl added 12.

The 2-5 Rebels host the Hinsdale (N.H.) Pacers on Friday.



Windsor 38, Otter Valley 35

In Brandon, Cody TanCreti had 19 points to power the Yellow Jackets to the victory. He had help from Kyle Weidman with 10 points.

Bradley Christian had 12 points and 17 rebounds for the Otters.

"He's a rugged kid and he goes after everything," Otter Valley coach Bob Walsh said.

Joey Massores added eight points for OV.

Windsor falls to 3-4. The Otters take a 1-6 record to Burr and Burton on Friday.



GIRLS HOCKEY

Hartford 3, BBA 2

In Woodstock, Hartford scored all three goals in the third period of Woodstock's tournament. Jenny Marioti had two of them and Rebecca Fogg the other. They each also had an assist.

Hannah Corkum and Piper Ferrone had the goals for Burr and Burton.

Hartford goalie Brooke Harrington had 21 saves and BBA goalie Kristen Palmer collected 20.

Lebanon 8, Woodstock 1

In Woodstock, Lebanon breezed past the hosts in this holiday tourney behind Molly Whitaker (two goals) and Hannah Gage (a goal and three assists).

Emily Coetsier had 19 saves for the 1-7 Wasps. Lebanon goalie Jackie Goodell had nine stops.

Woodstock is home again Saturday against Northfield.



Mount Mansfield 9, MSJ 1

An undermanned Mount St. Joseph team expended a lot of energy but with just seven skaters due to illness, could not keep pace with the Cougars.

Colleen Shouldice scored for MSJ with Laura Scully assisting.

Heather Bedell had two goals and an assist and Jen Haley had two goals to lead Mount Mansfield.

"Other coaches have told me how much effort our team is giving for having so few players," MSJ coach Joey Ferrara said. "They are giving the maximum effort. Some of them had to play almost the whole game and three of them were sick. What we're asking them to do is unheard-of."

MSJ netminder Katelyn Robertello was busy with 30 saves.

MSJ hosts Colchester on Saturday.



BOYS HOCKEY

Harwood 4, Woodstock 3

In, Woodstock, Harwood scored two goals in the third quarter to come from behind and beat the Wasps.

Going into the third quarter with a score of 3-2, the Wasps were unable to hold the lead as the Highlanders Trey Keindl scored the game-winning goal with 9:37 left to play in the third.

The Highlanders also got key scores from Nate Vasseur, T.J. Morse, and Nick Laskaris.

Harwood's second goaltender of the game, Austin Coles, came up with key saves on a couple of Wasp breakaways to preserve the win.

The Wasps' Nico Brands, Tim Barrett, and Brian Martin and each scored.

Harwood now moves to 6-1 and the Wasps fall to 2-6.

Woodstock will next host Montpelier on Saturday.



UVM routs Buffs

HONOLULU — Mike Trimboli scored 24 points to lead Vermont to an 84-59 win over Colorado Tuesday in Tuesday's third-place game of the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic.

Trimboli made eight of his nine field goal attempts, including a perfect four of four on 3-pointers and four of five free throws.

He also grabbed four rebounds and had five assists.

Vermont got 16 points and six rebounds from Marqus Blakely and 12 points and six boards from Colin McIntosh.

Vermont (8-4) committed just six turnovers and outscored Colorado (7-5) 42-26 in the second half during the first-ever meeting between the schools.
