In Plattsburgh, N.Y., freshman goalie Seth McNary stretched his scoreless string to seven-straight periods in Castleton State College's 1-0 overtime victory over Williams in the first round of the Plattsburgh State Cardinal Classic on Friday.
McNary made 26 stops in an evenly played contest as the Spartans improved to 5-4-0 and dropped the Ephmen to 4-3.
Stuart Stefan scored 21 seconds into overtime with an assist from Brandon Heck, an ECAC East Player of the Week in December. Heck gained a loose puck in a battle along the boards and fed it to Stefan behind the net; Stefan skated out in front and quickly beat goalie Marc Pulde over his right shoulder for the game-winner.
Pulde had 23 saves.
Castleton will play in the title game tonight (7 p.m.) against Plattsburgh, a 5-1 winner over Wesleyan on Friday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Springfield 36, MSJ 31
Desmond Dana helped bail out the Cosmos with four of her 10 points in the fourth period, when Springfield outscored the Mounties 12-3 and ended a bid by MSJ to win for the first time this season.
"It seems like we have a quarter each game when we do not shoot well or take care of the ball," Mounties coach Ryan Watson said.
But Watson was pleased to see MSJ, which led most of the game, in position to win. Now the Mounties just have to learn to finish.
"I told them not to put their heads down," he said, "because that was the best game we've played all year. We're taking steps in the right direction."
Amanda Aberle added eight points for Springfield while Dominque Mercier had 16 and Allison Shappy seven for the 0-6 Mounties, who will visit South Royalton on Tuesday.
Hartford 67, Randolph 24
In White River Junction, Hartford turned up the defensive pressure and turned a 22-18 halftime lead into a runaway.
The Hurricanes improved to 3-4 with Windsor coming to town next Thursday.
Mary Hazen led the way for the Hurricanes with a career-high 17 points. Hazen began the season as the 11th player but has worked her way into the starting lineup.
"She comes to practice every day and busts her butt. She does everything I tell her," coach Steve Landon said.
Stacy Shellong and Stephanie Parker added 12 points each.
Javon Miller led Randolph with 14 points.
Arlington 68, Black River 53
In Arlington, Hailey Van Orman scored 25 points to lead Arlington to its first win of the season.
Meghan Phelps added 18 points, and Cathrine Macksey put up 12 points in her first game back from a torn ACL.
For Black River, Courtney Rohrig had 24 points, and Zoe Trimboli added 14 points.
Arlington will next be in action on Tuesday when the Eagles visit Poultney.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Proctor 80, Arlington 41
In Proctor, the Phantom players used the first quarter to shake off any rust that had accumulated from their almost two-week absence from game play.
In that quarter, the Phantoms, who hadn't played since a Dec. 22 win, went on a 14-3 run over the Eagles. By the second quarter, though, the rust was gone and team was back to its old form. By halftime, the score was a lopsided 37-7.
Defense was key in this game for the Phantoms, and only Logan Foster, 19 points, was able to reach double-digit points for the Eagles.
For the Phantoms, Curtis Robinson led the attack with 24 points, and Zach Currier followed with 10 points.
The 6-0 Phantoms will next be in action when they travel to Poultney on Monday.
Burr and Burton 59, Otter Valley 38
In Manchester, a 10-day layoff did little to slow down the Bulldogs, who led 25-5 after a period and 40-9 at the half before going heavily to the bench for the rest of the night.
Guard Chris Antonez had 22 of his 27 points by halftime.
"Our defensive assignments were very disciplined and we did a good job attacking their zone," BBA coach Seth Rice said. "We got Chris a lot of good looks at the basket."
Danny Favreau added nine points and six assists for BBA, which improved to 3-2 going into Monday's home game against Hartford.
Bradley Christian had eight points and Brett Lertola seven for the Otters.
Twinfield 90, Rochester 69
In Rochester, the Rockets had a 41-35 lead at halftime before the Trojans ran away.
Taylor Fuller had 35 points for Rochester, but only 12 after halftime. Jace Curtis added 12 for the 3-4 Rockets, who will visit Cabot on Monday.
Poultney 67, Green Mountain 59
In Chester, Phil Hawthorn had 17 points to lead the Blue Devils over a Chieftains team that continues to struggle from the foul line.
GM shot 9-for-23 on Friday and shot 12-for-29 and 5-for-19 in the previous two games. Coach Stretch Gillam says the Chiefs cold have won two of the games with a better performance from the line.
"We shot 100 foul shots on New Year's Eve and 100 on New Year's Day. We can't do much else," he said.
Alex Howe and Alex Monroe had 16 points each and Ian Furrer added 13 for the 1-6 Chieftains, who will visit Twin Valley on Monday.
Twin Valley 74, Black River 48
In Ludlow, a big Twin Valley second half propelled the Wildcats to a 6-1 start to their season.
With a halftime score at 33-26 in favor of Twin Valley, the Wildcats, who hadn't played since they lost to Thetford Academy, scored 41 points as they outhustled the Presidents.
Eric Froment led the Wildcats' onslaught with 25 points, and Scott Hayford followed with 16 points.
For the 3-4 Presidents, Bobby Rohrig led the way with 13 points, and Chris Kowalski added 12.
Black River will take on Arlington next when the Presidents visit the Eagles on Monday. Twin Valley will play host to Green Mountain the same night.
Twin Valley 65, Hinsdale, N.H. 61
In Townshend, Tyler Russell had eight of his 26 points in the fourth period and the Rebels went on to win a game that was close throughout.
The Wildcats' performance was distinguished by missed opportunities as they created offense with their defense but could not finish.
But in the fourth the locals came through. Bo Attley had four key points and some clutch rebounding and Colin Nystrom converted a key 1-and-1 at the line on his way to six points. Matt Bizon added 12 points for the 3-5 Wildcats, who will host West Rutland on Monday.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Bates 90, Castleton 50
In Springfield, Mass., John Squires led 5-4 Bates with 12 points in the first round of the Holiday Inn/Naismith Classic.
Castleton, which fell to 0-8, was led by Seth Harrington with 16 points and Kevin Cayea with 15.
Otter Valley 50, Fair Haven 46
In Brandon, with the score deadlocked at 44 going into overtime, the Otters spotted the Slaters a basket and then scored the next six points.
Sophomore Jessica Greeno's jumper put the Otters up for keeps and put an exclamation point on what was a breakout game for the forward, who finished with a game-high 16 points.
Michelle Lefebvre added 10 points, while 5-foot-5 center Amanda Sanderson snared 10 rebounds.
Allison Mancuso helped Fair Haven come back from a 25-13 halftime deficit, scoring all 13 of her points in the second half. Devyn Reed added 11 and Amanda Howard chipped in 10 points.
