SOUTH BURLINGTON — A Vermont Army National Guard unit that spent a year in Afghanistan training military police is back home.
More than a dozen members of Task Force Stone got a hero's welcome at Burlington International Airport on Saturday after returning on separate flights from Fort Riley, Kan., where they were processed to end their deployments.
Gov. James Douglas and Maj. Gen. Michael Dubie, commander of the Vermont National Guard, joined with about 100 family members and friends to welcome the troops home.
Only a handful of Vermonters remain deployed abroad now, but the Guard has been notified of a possible deployment to Afghanistan next year.
