Legislators should forego pay raise

Published: January 7, 2009

We should be proud of David Ainsworth, state representative from South Royalton, for his objection to the legislators taking an automatic pay raise this year, due to the severe shortfall of revenue. David said, "I don't think it's appropriate to take an increase. Definitely, I could use it to pay my help when I am gone, but I don't think it's appropriate when you're making cuts."

While David milks cows for his living, he is not interested in milking us, as is Senate Majority Leader John Campbell, a Quechee Democrat, who would prefer retaining automatic cost-of-living increases without considering current circumstances. All of us should write or call our legislators and insist they forego a pay raise at this time, as suggested by David. The sum total saved just might save someone's job.

All public sector employees, from the President of the United States to the newest teacher hire in Vermont, should take a 10% pay reduction.

Good idea...we should poll every member of the house and senate and post their vote on the front page of the Herald for all to see
