Patriots roll over MSJ

In Bennington, Mount Anthony rolled over Mount St. Joseph in a boys Marble Valley League basketball game, 79-34 on Tuesday night.
Dan Nichols tossed in 13 points to lead four Patriots in double figures. Mount Anthony outscored the Mounties 23-4 in the first period and was never threatened.
Kyle Callahan and Taylor Burke added 12 points each for 4-3 Mount Anthony and Clayton Palmer had 10.
Leighton Thayer paced the Mounties, 1-6, with 10 points, and Josiah Corlew had nine.
Mount Anthony will host Rutland High School on Thursday night, while MSJ will visit Windsor on Friday.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
South Royalton 67,
Mount St. Joseph 30
In South Royalton, the Royals upped their record to 7-2. Shanna Duffy led the hosts with 16 points, followed by Megan Whitcomb with 12 and Noel Woolf with nine.
For MSJ, Ally Shappy had 16 points and Dominique Mercier had eight.
The Royals will host Central Vermont League rival Whitcomb on Friday.
Black River 44, L&G 33
In Ludlow, Courtney Rohrig scored 24 points to power Black River to the win. Tina Valente chipped in with six.
Becca Bizon had nine points to lead Leland & Gray. Her help came from Aly Marucci and Karle Kauffeld with six each.
Black River took control early and forged a 18-9 lead by halftime.
"We played a very aggressive defense. We pressed full court and they had trouble with it," Black River coach Peter Collins said.
"We also did a good job of passing the ball in to our interior players. It was a good team effort."
The 2-4 Presidents will try for another win Thursday when they host Poultney.
BBA 70, Proctor 17
In Manchester, Burr and Burton Academy stretched its record to 8-0 by breezing past winless Proctor.
Jenna Hoffman and Nina Shehadi led the Bulldogs with 14 points apiece. Jen Connell led the Phantoms with seven points.
"We've got a good, tough week coming up," BBA coach Jeff Houghton said of the approaching games with Woodstock and Mill River.
Windsor 53, Fair Haven 24
In Windsor, the Yellow Jackets defense helped them get out to a 23-7 halftime lead as they improved to 6-1.
The Windsor press and zone put the pressure on Fair Haven and when the Slaters got off a shot, Morghan Farnsworth and Meg Januszewski hit the boards hard and made sure there were no second chances.
Kaitlin Callahan enjoyed a good night running the Windsor offense with 11 points. Farnsworth added eight as 11 Windsor players scored.
Devyn Reed, Allison Mancuso and Amanda Howard had four points apiece for Fair Haven.
Arlington 46, Poultney 22
In Poultney, the Blue Devils could not shake off the rust of a nine-day layoff and quickly found themselves down to Arlington 17-0 and 30-6 by halftime.
"They came out and pressed us and we had quite a few turnovers," Poultney coach David Hughes said.
Meaghan Phelps led the 4-2 Eagles with 14 points and Maggie Belnap added 11.
Leading the 2-4 Devils was Ali Jones with eight.
The Devils must now take to the road. They are at Black River on Thursday and at Leland & Gray on Saturday.
Mill River 44, BF 26
In Westminster, Mill River's pressure caused Bellows Falls to turn the ball over 40 times. You rarely win with that many turnovers and Bellows Falls did not as the Terriers fell to 1-5.
The Terriers did grab a 2-0 lead, but it was their only one of the night.
"We're just struggling," Bellows Falls coach Jayne Barber said.
Mackenzie Mooney had 15 points to lead the 4-4 Minutemen. Chelsea Bagley and Rebecca Day added nine apiece.
Leading the Terriers were Julie Cermola and Darete Fontaine with seven points each.
The Terriers visit Mount St. Joseph Academy on Friday night.
Mill River will host Otter Valley on Friday.
Thetford 43, Otter Valley 41
In Brandon, Amanda Martin's putback at the buzzer decided this one, which was close all the way.
Her shot followed two free throws by Otter Valley's Emily Waldrip, who tied the game at 41 each in the final minute.
Caitlin Roberts had eight points and India Scoepetti and Holly Buttry added seven apiece for Thetford. Martin finished with four points.
Michelle Lefebvre and Kristy Pinkham had 10 points apiece for the 3-5 Otters while Waldrip added eight.
The Otters will visit Mill River on Friday.
Woodstock 35, Springfield 33
In Woodstock, the Cosmos grabbed the lead briefly in the third period, but Woodstock got it back and held on for the victory.
Grace Amato led the Wasps with 13 points and Carly Harris threw in seven.
The Cosmos were led by Desmond Dana with eight and Chelsea Howard with six.
BOYS SOCCER
Akin recommended
Ian Akin will be recommended to the school board to replace Kevin Ratti as the boys varsity soccer coach at Mill River Union High School.
Akin's last coaching position was as men's and women's soccer coach at College of St. Joseph.
MEN'S HOCKEY
Plattsburgh 3, Norwich 1
In Plattsburgh, N.Y., three different players scored goals to lead the top-ranked Cardinals over 12th-ranked Norwich in a nonconference game. Plattsburgh (12-0-2) scored the last three goals of the game, getting markers from Dylan Clarke, Phil Farrow and Tom Breslin.
Norwich (5-3-2) opened the scoring at the 6:22 mark of the first period when D.J. Fimiani scored off assists from Jim Koehler and C.J. Viso.
