EAST PUTNEY — A 166-year-old meeting house plagued by a leaky roof has been awarded a state grant to get it fixed.
Pierce's Hall, which was built in 1832 as a Methodist meeting house, won the $12,500 grant from the state Division of Historic Preservation. The president of the Putney Historical Society says more money will be needed for the roof work but he says the grant will help preserve the building.
Stuart Strothman says there are few places in the state that carry on the Vermont tradition of contra dancing, and that Pierce's Hall is one of them.
The building, which sprang the leak two years ago, now hosts monthly contra dances and potluck suppers.
