Sanders objects to text with Bush portrait

Toolbox

The Associated Press - Published: January 12, 2009

MONTPELIER — U.S. Sen. Bernard Sanders, I-Vt., is objecting to wording accompanying a portrait of President George Bush installed at the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery in Washington.

Sanders, a strong opponent of the Iraq war, has asked the Smithsonian to rewrite the text that says Bush's two terms in office were "marked by a series of catastrophic event" including the "the attacks on September 11, 2001, that led to wars in Afghanistan and Iraq."

Sanders says the notion that the terrorist attacks were linked to or led to the Iraq war has been widely debunked.

In a letter to the gallery director Martin Sullivan, he has asked the Smithsonian to rewrite the text, to avoid what he calls rewriting history.

Museum spokeswoman Bethany Bentley says museum officials were preparing a response to Sanders and did not want to comment.

Whilst this country is on a long, excruciating, slow slide into the bowels of hell it IS comforting to know that Sen Sanders hasn't lost focus of the things that are really important like a few words that accompany a Presidential portrait. What attention to detail! Now IF he can just round up the rest of the pathetic jackasses from BOTH parties in Congress and implore them to focus on issues that are REALLY important maybe we can right this sinking ship. Make sure someone wake up Sen Byrd. Ha Ha! It's pathetic, ladies and gentlemen. ABSOLUTELY PATHETIC!!

Ummm Arnie Thibault,

President Bush & Co. dangled the prospect of having martial law declared in the days and weeks running up to the election unless the Wall Street bailout package was passed. GOOGLE IT !!! Bush & Co. wanted a constitutional crisis to unfold unless they were able to loot the treasury. Also, if Bush did not want the recent bailout funding to happen, he didn't have to sign it. The BUCK stops on his desk.
It's HIS signature on the legislation. It does not go into law without his signature.
And Arnie, stop parroting my proposals about wiping out student loan debt.
I was suggesting VERY specific ideas related to that topic back in October.
YOU NEVER get any of your facts or dates correct by the way.
I refuse to spend the time correcting them all, but here is one just for starters.
The Community Reinvestment Act was signed into law in 1977, not 1976.
You were attempting to comment on it but failed miserably in the process.
So Old Jarhead learned how to use a spell checker ? Big whoop.
Still the same old idiot.

FYI Notta

It was Democrats who have sponsored and co sponsored all of the Bailouts and it was Democrats who voted in vast majority over the Republicans for all of the same bailouts.

It was Chris Dodd who pressured Bill Clinton in 1994 and 1995 to alter the Housing Relief Act that was actually given ink in 1976. It was those changes that lead to the problems of today and for most of the years the Republicans were issuing warnings to the deaf Democrats.

Get your facts straight Notta, Bush had nothing to do with any of the bailouts, he may have supported them and he even may have wanted them, but a President can not sponsor a Bill that has to be done by Congress and it was and by Majority of Democrats.

Obama today has spoken about an additional $850 Billion and Nancy Pelosi a few weeks ago pledged an additional $350 billion.

Instead of bailing out the BIG Boys who put us in the recession why don't we erase all student loans/ It would cost less than $400 billion and it would be an investment in our future and the money they would save on loan payments would be put back into the economy. It would have been far cheaper than the $1.1 Trillion the Democrats already spent bailing out their Lobbyist buddies.

VTis, you old spinmeister you, where did you get that $120 million figure for the inauguration? Same place as the $95/hour auto workers? Even the right-wingers at the link below claim only $45 million (plus security which the Bushies also had, doncha think?).

http://newsbusters.org/blogs/rich-noyes/2009/01/14/ap-slammed-bush-s-extravagant-inaugural-05-now-it-s-spend-baby-spend

And just how does the Bush-requested "billions for bankers" program relate to Obama anyway? Seems to me I've seen Bush and his Wall Street buddy Henry standing on the steps of the Capitol where they had gone a-begging for the free money they got to fatten the coffers of the very people who caused this recession-soon-to-be-depression.

Don't try to tag this one on me, pal. I'm as fiscally conservative as you are socially conservative. I'd sooner see the auto companies get way more help than we gave to the gd banks and their greedy billionaire CEOs. At least they produce a product. Banks and other Wall Street-related creations just take and take and take while doling out interest rates like 1/2 of one percent while their credit card rates are 24%. That used to be called usury and was against the law. Didn't Jesus toss the money-changers out of the temple? The Bushies have invited them back in!

Sanders is as worthless as teats on a Bull.
He is a proclaimed Socialist who belongs to the Independent Party of rather lack of party, that alone will dictate what Committees he will be invited to be a member of.

Joe Lieberman and Bernie Sanders are the only two independents, so I guess they could form their own two member committee.

Sanders is a lot like Dean was, he is a person who does little token things that make it appear he is really doing something in the interest of the people. You know like Dean when he stole the highway funds and used them for other things and after several years people started to take notice, so he would have four state trucks sent to patch one hole and their presence made people think actual road work was getting done. Dean and Sanders come from the same genes; they are master of deceit and are even better at pointing out others faults.

Oh! And Notta, it seems you are a Bush Hater; would you care to be first to name one single item that President Bush is solely responsible for and acted without the House or Senate support? You all feel that President Bush is such a bad man, so please, I am very interested in what he did wrong, and make sure you have reference to your statements and no wild rhetoric please.

The bottom line is what has Bernie accomplished in all these years that has benefitted Vermont? Where are the new jobs, where are lower taxes, where's the money to fix our roads and bridges? I'm not a Bush fan either but no one can deny the fact that since 9-11 we have not been attacked again. If Sanders spent 15 minutes thinking about the portrait and 5 minutes composing his letter that was twenty minutes of time wasted when there are so many other real issues out there. Bernie looks out for Bernie, he makes a good living as a representative of the citizens of Vermont, but like so many other politicians he does what's best for himself, including looking to headlines to get free publicity. Where are the changes he keeps talking about, how long must we wait before anything is done? Being an independent in a two party system does not benefit Vermont. There was a time Vermont sent people to Washington who were respected and Vermont benefitted from that. What are the new Vermont liberals sending to Washington now, what are they getting in return?

I do not claim to know if we were justified in going there, but I do wish that our President hadn't been dishonest about it.
I am anti violence by nature and also believe that the brave men and women who have risked or given their lives to serve their country deserve our gratitude.
In fact, I find myself enraged at the mistreatment of veterans that has been going on at least since the Vietnam era. It seems like once America is done using them up, they are abandoned. This is a tremendous moral outrage that needs to be corrected.

I served in war under both Bush presidents- AND WITH PRIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As a vet of both Desert Storm and OIF, I can say it seems to be those who have no idea what is going on over there that are quick to tell all they know. Most of us who have been there are quietly working, living and trying to have a normal life. Yes, there are some that have served who speak for or against the war, and they have every right to do either- they were there. Those like Sanders and his supporters who have never set foot on Iraqi soil, spoken to the Iraqi people, seen the horror that Saddam and his sons put upon their own people seem to be the ones that get the press time, have their ideals splashed all over the media, and those of us who really know the truth from living it are left to write commentaries that a bare few will read and that will have zero effect on the large scale.
So, with that said I disagree with Sanders asking for that change of wording. 9/11 certainly did have influance on our going to war with Iraq, and as far as re-writting history, it's Sanders and his type that are keeping our children from learning that Thanksgiving was a praise by the pilgrems to Jehovah God for helping them survive, that they came here for release from religious persicution, that our founding fathers PRAYED DAILY for guidence from Jehovah, and that the decision to go to war with England was based on Scripure searching and took a lot of time and argument to be decided because they couldn't agree on whether God would stand behind them. There are too many other things that have been "re-written" in the school books so our children don't know the truth of our own history to name here. Why not let this one truth stand?
But can we expect a country that makes history "politicly correct" to admit that a president the media despises because of his political affiliation made a good decision?

I think not.

Bernie is absolutely right on to prevent the usual rewriting of history that a run-away junta like the Bush administration is attempting to enshrine in The People's museum. Go for it Bernie! There's no excuse for what the Smithsonian is trying to get away with. Since when is that a political arm of the GOPs?

Of COURSE the tragedy of 9/11 led up to the invasion and occupation of Iraq. It was the grand excuse, covered by a thick layer of lies, that even now the Bush-apologists shriek was the cause of the war. Never mind that no WMD were found. Never mind that the Bushies are on iteration umpteen of "reasons why we liberated the Iraqi people form that old meanie guy (ostensibly by killing as many of them as possible in an endless war of choice)."

The only permission Bill had was from Senator Cohen and general Shelton, no Congress, No U.N. No Senators, no other countries, just a closed door, Bill and Cohen and Shelton.

Bush had the same Intel that Bill swore by and had 77 U.S. Senators vote in Support. There was 17 U.N. Resolutions issued to Saddam and many weeks of warnings. President Bush got approval from the U.N. and over 35 other Countries.
It seems that we all supported the move as well and now because some of the bozos out there just hate Republicans for made up reasons, they continue with their silly notions and bashings.

Who is responsible for spending $1.1 Trillion dollars that we don't have since July 08? Not Pres. Bush but the Democrat majority congress.
Who changed the Hosuing Relief Bill in 1994 and 1995 to allow this B.S. to get started and who influence the president to push it? Chris Dodd and Barney Frank and if you look at the sponsors and co sponsors of the Housing Relief Bailout, the same names appear.
Who hasn't even become President yet or has met with any Top Experts andyet has all of the answers? the kid in the candy store, Obama

I find it odd that when a Republican is President he is always referred to by his last name and when there is a Democrat as President, it is always President such and such. Just watch and pay attention.

Who has been trying to keep the taxes low? Who pushed for a Bill to make Social Security off limits to the Government? Who wanted to eliminate the Inheritence tax? Who made the tax system more fair by eliminating the dozens of brackets before and making only 4 now? Who took all the money out of the Social Security Trust to make it appear the Budget was balanced? Who gave a 15 year speculation on the Federal Debt and promisedin 15 year sit owuld be paid off, when in reality you can't predict next month what is going to happen, little aloe 15 years. Sweet talk that people fall to their knees over.
Who passed Tri mester abortion as legal? Who passed partial birth abortion as legal? Who wants to allow minor girls to be able to get abortions without telling their parents? Who wants Gun Control and feels that the 2nd Amendment is not a Right of the people? Who keeps electing Ted Kennedy who killed a woman and who now sits on a panel deciding who the next Supreme Court Justice will be? Where were the 535 members of the Legislative Branch (better known as the Congress) when supposedly President Bush was doing on these bad things? Who approved them? Who has the Congessional majority and has for 2 years and when did the economic problems start? when did the price of gas go up? who is it that wants to increase the gas tax now because as it was put, " the people are willing to pay $4 per gallon?

These are the Democrats that you seem to love so much and you hate president Bush because of why? name ONE single thing that President Bush did without any assistance from the Congress that you all hate so much. Name one thing.
You attacked him for whatever reason about his military obligation and if any of you are able to read a DD 214 you woul dhave seen that he served 627 AT Days in a 6 year obligation that only required 90 AT days. Seems he did above an dbeyond his obligation, but to listen to you all and Dan Rather he was a deserter or something. Yet John Kerry wrote himself up for medals, got and early release back to the states and you all kiss his boots.
You all really need to re aim you rhate for Republicans to the party who is really responsible for all the things you hate so much.

http://www.issues2000.org/Issues.htm

http://www.issues2000.org/default.htm

You see people, in Politics 101 you will learn that the President can not spend a single penny or sponsor or even co sponsor a Bill, it has to be done by the Congress. The Congress sure has been spending up a storm too, now haven't they? I hear there is another $1 trillion alread pledged and with Nancy Pelosi as a sponsor. I think she is Democrat as well.

One last thing. We are not at war with Iraq they are fighting and dying right beside us. We spend $8 billion per month on the War on Terror and that is pretty small as compared to what was just spent on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac or Wall Street. We hav eplanted the seeds for new Democracies to grow in the mid east, a very good investment indeed and the money spent on the bailouts? Well I assure you it won't make a hill of beans worth of differenc efo us little people. It will be our taxes that will go up to pay for them, but it won't affect us, th ebulk of the $700 Billion will go to World Banks.

Hey Bernie, it did lead to both wars! Without I doubt the Iraq war would have had a good excuse, but who cares! You want something to work on, let's start with our highways and town streets we can't drive on. Our schools seem to need some help, how about you make news headlines for solving those problems. The list can go on. Wake up! Bush is gone, history is history. Please start finding a better use for my tax dollars the you gladly take to represent me.

"Museum spokeswoman Bethany Bentley says museum officials were preparing a response to Sanders and did not want to comment."

Heres a response....trillion dollar debt, people losing their homes, record unemployment, wide open southern border, and Bernies wasting time on a PAINTING?
Actually, i dont have a response..not one that would get by the censors.
