KILLINGTON — A 50-year-old skier from New York City got lost at Killington Ski Area Saturday afternoon, and spent more than 9-1/2 hours in the woods before he walked out on Wheelerville Road in Mendon, Vermont State Police said.
Alex Krok told police he skied out of bounds on the Juggernaut Trail on Saturday afternoon and then was unable to return to the main ski area.
Vermont State Police Sgt. Thomas Mozzer said Sunday that police didn't launch a search for Krok because they didn't know where he was.
"That's 30 to 40 square miles out there," said Mozzer, who said that the 911 emergency system was unable to lock onto Krok's cell phone and give the police coordinates on where he was.
Mozzer said it was 14 degrees and 5 inches of new snow had fallen when police finally found Krok.
Mozzer said it was unclear whether Krok skied deliberately off the Juggernaut Trail, or left the trail by accident and was unable to get back onto the main mountain. He said that Krok was not familiar with Killington Ski Area.
Police said that Krok estimated he left the trail at about 3:15 p.m., and he called 911 at 5:30 p.m. to say he was lost. He said the skier traveled about 3-1/2 miles after leaving the trail.
Police and the Killington constable located Krok at 11:15 p.m. Saturday on the Wheelerville Road, between Brewers Corner and Notch Road. Krok did not require medical attention, police said.
