Workers from the Rutland Department of Public Works uncovered a leak in a city water line this morning after they began digging up a sinkhole on West Street near the intersection of Wales Street, according to Danny Maniery, the department's street division manager.

A big dip in the road had been forming during the past four months in front of the FairPoint Communications building and workers set out to fix it early Monday.

But when they began to dig it up in an effort to level the street off, workers discovered a water leak.

According to Maniery, the city's water department would work toward sealing the fixable leak, but a timeline for the completion of the project was not provided.

Maniery said frost and freezing temperatures were unlikely causes.

Traffic was redirected away from the sinkhole and leak throughout the day Monday, causing minor delays.

Thank you for getting on this and fixing the problem. I drive over this sinkhole at least 15 times a day for work and it really is a dangerous spot to have to slow down to almost a stop so you don't bottom out. The tourists just fly down this road and I was afraid one of them would rear end me soon! Thank you again!
