HANOVER, N.H. — The Vermont Shrine team, representing 36 of the finest high school football players in the Green Mountain state, has been selected for the 56th Annual Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl. The summer classic will be played Aug. 1 on MacLeay-Royce Field in Windsor, Vt.

The New Hampshire Shrine team is expected to be named in about three weeks and then the match up for the 2009 Bowl Game will be complete.

Close to 100 players from Vermont high schools were nominated by their head coaches and a screening committee chaired by Vermont Shrine had coach Mike Hatt of Springfield and made up of coaches from every division, made the final selection.

The two teams will meet in early March to review game plans and formal practice will begin July 22 at Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, N.H. With the exception of a trip to the Shrine Hospital for Children in Springfield, Mass., double sessions will be the order of day until the two teams move to Windsor for the game.

The Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl is played for the benefit of the Shriners' Hospitals for Crippled and Burned Children and in its first 55 years has raised nearly four million dollars. The Bowl Game is one of 40 Shrine games played every year nation-wide. The twin state game is sponsored by the three Shrine Centers of New Hampshire and Vermont, Bektash (Concord), Cairo (Rutland) and Mt. Sinai (Montpelier).
