WINHALL – Voters on Town Meeting Day will be asked to approve all three local option taxes available to municipalities, 1 percent on retail sales, rooms and meals and alcohol.

Town Administrator Dennis McCarthy said the money raised by the local option tax would be used to offset the projected development of a house and land at 113 Route 30 in Bondville into municipal offices.

The town has pursued an upgrade of its municipal offices for at least six years, according to McCarthy.

During the November elections, voters approved a plan that would have included renovations for the fire department and a new police headquarters, as well as new town offices but a re-vote in January overturned the results.

The town has already purchased the Route 30 home, which once belonged to the Benache family.

After the town hall renovations, the local option tax would be used to offset the property tax burden on residents.

In Vermont, municipalities were not allowed to collect any taxes except property taxes. The local option tax allows certain communities, which pay more into the state's education fund than they get back, to collect a second tax if voters approve it.
