DUMMERSTON - One of the oldest iron truss bridges in Vermont will once again open to traffic.

The state is accelerating a project to get the historic green iron bridge just off Route 30 open to traffic after 10 years.

Windham Regional Commission traffic planner Matt Mann says the bridge that crosses the West River near Stickney Brook Road is an important river crossing.

Reopening the bridge will get some of the traffic off a covered bridge that crosses the West River upstream.

Bids for the expected $3.2 million project are expected to go out this summer with construction to start in the spring of next year.

Mann says it's not clear whether federal stimulus money will be used for the project.

The great Hoover Dam was built in less than three years. The whole project was up and producing electricity in approx. five years. The state of Vermont can't replace a steel truss bridge in less than ten years. PITIFUL !!!
