Yankee springs another hot leak

BRATTLEBORO — Entergy Nuclear announced late Wednesday afternoon that it had another radioactive leak, this time in a filter that removes radioactivity from other water leaks.

The company, in its weekly newsletter to the media, said the leak was not affecting the operation of the plant. The leak was found in a filter in a portion of the plant that was plagued by another leak that was fixed last week after three months of leaking thousands of gallons of radioactive water.

Robert Williams, spokesman for Entergy Nuclear, said the two leaks were not related. None of the radioactive water was released into the environment; it was filtered and returned to service, Williams said.

The filter/demineralizer removes impurities from the water in the cleanup system in the reactor, and also removes radioactivity.

He said while the leaking demineralizer filter was taken off line today, there is still another filter on the system.

The reactor can operate for an "extended period of days" with only the one filter/demineralizer.

He said Entergy Nuclear technicians were already working on developing a repair plan.

The older leak was finally fixed last week after several tries. That leak was in the reactor water cleanup check valve and was finally sealed by expert technicians brought in by Entergy.

Today's announcement is the third radioactive leak at the plant in the past three months.

DDD. Dangerous, Dirty, and Down (as in "knock knock, who's there? Where's the cooling tower? Down! Just when they got the SCR message pounded in our minds (you know, the three words starting with S and C and R that they repeat over and over and over) it's time to replace it with DDD. Dangerous, Dirty, and Down (as in "knock knock, who's there? Where's the cooling tower? Down!
Now it's DDDL. Did you say Gov. Jim brought Vermont DSL? No, he brought us DDDL. Entergy's performance speaks for itself. STOP making arguments about how "bad" the place is. It's obvious. No question about it. How do you make the place less dangerous? Support in court.

This plant is how many years old at this point? The metals used in it's construction were originally projected to last how many years? These small problems repeatedly popping up are a red warning flag that things are aging and fatigued, especially with the recent power 'upgrade', one of these days something is going to 'break' somewhere that cannot be readily repaired while the system is still hot, and we are really going to have a serious mess to deal with...

First, "Stop Leak". If that doesn't work, then JBWELD. Finally, an old bike tube wrapped around it and zip-tied or hose clamped. Seems to work on my old Dodge pick-up...

Huh. Something else. Go figure. Anyone interested on maybe making some money betting on how long or how many tries it takes them to fix this one? "Extended period of days." Talk about avoiding a question. Would love to know how they fixed that last leak. JBWELD?
