BARRE — State police say a Twinfield Union High School teacher is facing charges of sexually exploiting a 16-year-old student.

Fifty-four-year-old John Buttura, Jr., of Waterbury Center, is accused of having sexual intercourse with the student over a two-month period.

Buttura, who has been a teacher at Twinfield for about 10 years, has been suspended from his job. Twinfield, located in Marshfield, serves that town and neighboring Plainfield.

Buttura is scheduled to be arraigned on the charge on Wednesday.

READER COMMENTS

Years ago these incidents were handled much more discretely by the officials and the press/media. Today, it's all about the publicity -- lawyers want it for prosecuting or defending and the media wants it for circulation/ad revenue. Neither are particularly concerned about the truth anymore!

The sexual exploitation of a minor by a school teacher or official is reprehensible and should be dealt with using the maximum severity of the law, once all the facts have been gathered and a verdict has been rendered.

Parents must remain ever vigilant today!

This is happening all over the country. Go to www.schoolteachernews.com and click on the Scandal page. This year they have documented over 185 of these types of incidents. In 2008 they found 478 of these types of cases.
