Luis Algarin, who offered the promise of creating hundreds of jobs in the Rutland area with his wood pellet stove business, has filed for bankruptcy.

Algarin’s Vermont Wood Energy Corp. filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy last week, owing creditors, including hundreds of customers who either pre-bought wood pellets or were promised pellets at $199 a ton for life, more than $4 million.

READER COMMENTS

I heard that not long before Luis and Lisa Algarin moved to Vermont from New Hampshire they stole many thousands of dollars from a woman with children who was dying from cancer. This guy and his wife are creeps and thieves! They belong in jail.

This comment thread ran off the rails pretty quickly.

For what it's worth, the completely inevitable failure of Luis "The Music Man" Algarin's wood pellet / pull the wool over the eyes of gullible state and local "business leaders" scheme has about as much to do with gay marriage as with the Swine Flu, the War on Christmas, and the Obamas' new dog: nada.

Anyway, have fun with your flame war.

Actually the country looses. This particular guy must have been a dirt bag and its probably a good thing that he's gone. But, small business is what this state is all about and as it stands the dairy farmers, to name only one, is going into the files of at risk companies.

And to reply to Dave, the answer is, NO, they can't. They don't do justice to single issues let alone multi task. Had they been doing a good job the public would be happy, and its not. Just in case you didn't notice.

And None None, your assumtion that gays "won" just may not be a permanent thing. Look to Iowa and see how secure they feel their. Opposition was started the day of "your" victory and 2012 is the target date for that to come to voters their. Voters terrify you people for a reason. And its coming to VT, first by way of the 2010 elections and then by legislation to fix this mistake. Only time will tell. And after the real VOTERS have had their say, I can live with whatever happens. Enjoy your long weekend.

"******"? How do you spell that?

Actually, as I've said a billion times, I don't have an opinion on gay marriage, so I didn't "lose."

But we ALL have been losing for years here in VT, as Big Brother continues his expansion amongst a desperate people-- made desperate by ever expanding taxation and a climate that's outright hostile to sustainable economic growth.

Mark,

******** and get over it. The gay community won, you lost. Must you cry about it on EVERY TOPIC?

It's funny how you guys think Liberals and Pro-Gay people got upset and cried about everything.

Religious conservatives are 1000x worse.

Dave None, I think your question is answered on a daily basis right here in this newspaper, and others around the state of VT.

Wow. Shocked, SHOCKED I am. This guy has had "scam artist" written all over him since day one. Wild claims of 500 to 600 new jobs within three years... a past conviction for workers' compensation fraud... the quick collapse of his lease agreement at the airport... mounting complaints from customers (who are REALLY gonna start screaming now)... and on and on (and on).

I can't help feeling sorry for those customers getting the short end of the stick. And I REALLY pity those two or three local residents who actually wrote letters to the editor defending the man! I wonder how they're feeling about Mr. Algarin now...

Such an intelligent comment mark.

Gee, you think that the legislature can't address multiple issues at once?

Not surprising at all, "lifelong" price guarantee, he said. What a joke!....as anyone knows...if a deal sounds too good to be true..it probably is! Consumers beware!

This is perfectly OK, because the gay marriage proponents assured us, in no uncertain terms, that there was NO NEED for the state of VT to prioritize the crumbling economy. So, clearly, we should all relax and not worry that yet another VT business has imploded.
