Residents will converge at their local meeting places and town halls this Saturday in an effort to keep the Green Mountain State just that — green.
For this year's annual Green Up Day on Saturday, free doughnuts and coffee will be plentiful for volunteers willing to stuff bags of roadside trash from Brandon to Tinmouth while in other towns, such as Shrewsbury, school children will continue their emerging tradition of sorting trash and redeeming what's recycleable to pay for their field trips.
Barbecues will be had in Killington and West Rutland and a ham dinner and entertainment will be served up the night before the statewide day of community cleanup in Chittenden.
The following is a list of Green Up Day activities in Rutland County and beyond:
The Springfield Regional Chamber of Commerce and the town are asking volunteers for the Saturday cleanup to meet in the Chittenden Bank parking lot at 8:30 a.m. with rakes, gloves and other supplies for cleaning roadside trash. At 11:30 a.m., volunteers will be treated to free refreshments and a cookout. For more information, call the Chamber of Commerce at 885-2779.
In Ludlow, the all-day event will be capped with free T-shirts, goodies for children and a complementary barbecue at the West Hill Recreation Center at 1 p.m. Bags and route assignments will be given out at 9:30 a.m. at West Hill and participants are asked to return to the center by 1 p.m.
The town's transfer station will offer half-price disposal from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday for homeowners or renters with a valid 2009 transfer station permit.

More than 100 bags have already been distributed in Hubbardton, but more will be available today at Town Hall and Saturday at the Hortonia Store on Route 144. Green Up Day coordinator John Reed of St. John Road also asked participants to come to his home or the town garage for bags if needed. Filled bags can be left curbside and the town's road crew and volunteers will make pickups. For more information, call Reed at 273-2475.
In Sudbury, bags can be picked up today at the town clerk's office and on Saturday, from the home of Lynnwood Smith from 8 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Smith can be reached at 623-7351.
Full bags can be brought to the town's recycling center on Williams Lane and transferred to the Salisbury dump at 10:45 a.m. This year, volunteers will pick through the trash, resort and recycle.
In Benson, bags can be picked up at the Benson Village Store, the Silverwear Jewelry Store and the G&L General Store. The town clerk's office is hosting a free lunch for all volunteers at noon at 2760 Stage Road. Trash can be dumped at the Old North Lake Road dump or can be left curbside. If you live in Brandon and want to help, head to the bandstand in the central park from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and pick up bags and a free hot chocolate, coffee or doughnut.
Route assignments will be given out and trash can be dumped at the transfer station on Corona Street or placed curbside. Organizer Jim Leary is seeking volunteers with pickups to pick up garbage and deliver it to the station. After the cleanup, there will be a contest for the most unusual or interesting item of garbage. For more information, call 247-9595.
Castleton cleaners can leave the trash they pick up road side and bring their own bags if more are needed. Green Up Day bags are available through organizer Julie Finnegan at 468-5197. Drop the trash at the dump off Staso Road.
Chittenden's Church of the Wildwood will host its annual Green Up Day volunteer appreciation feast tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at the church on Holden Road. A ham dinner will be served and Pittsford band Woodchuck's Revenge will play. The cost is $10 for adults and 50 cents per year of age for children. On Saturday, bags can be picked up outside the church's doors along with free coffee and doughnuts. Leave garbage bags road side after the cleanup or bring them to the dump in Chittenden. Clarendon residents can pick up bags at Town Hall at 8 a.m. and leave full bags roadside or in a trash bin behind town hall. For more information, call coordinator Eric Jenson at 438-2581.
Danby residents can pick up their bags at the Silas Griffith Inn today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday on the front porch. Drop off trash at the at the town dump off Brook Road. For more information, call organizer Catherine Preble at 293-5567.
The Conservation Commission table near the Middletown Springs Fire House will be the meeting place for this year's Green Up Day activities in the town. From 8 a.m. to noon, residents can pick up bags, route assignments and refreshments at the table. For more information, call 235-1272.
In Ira, residents can pick up bags at Town Hall at 8 a.m., along with a cookie and have a gander at the flower garden where seniors will be planting perennials are maintaining them. The cleanup will end at noon, at which time resident Jeff Davis will haul filled bags of trash from the front of town hall to the dump. For more information, call Catherine Alta-Johnson at 235-2345.
Under the banner hanging in front of the Wallingford Rotary building on North Main Street is where residents can get their bags, coverage area assignment, gloves, cider and treats from 9 a.m. to noon. The town's transfer station will take bags for free. For more information, call Debbie Scranton at 446-2267.
Wells cleaners can start at the town office at 8:30 a.m., picking up bags, doughnuts and coffee. Participants are urged to use gloves for the cleanup, to be followed by a hot dog roast at the Wells Fire Department. For more information, call Christine Scarlotta at 645-0469.
In Poultney, bags can be picked up at the town office on Main Street and Saturday's work hours are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The town's road crew will pick up trash from the road side after the day is done. For more information, call the town office at 287-9751.
Volunteers outside Killington Fire and Rescue will be giving out bags from 8:30 a.m. to noon and will host an annual barbecue of food donated by Killington Resort and the Killington Market & Deli. Collected trash can be dropped off at the River Road transfer station free of charge. For more information, call Deb Burke at 422-3623.
Mendon residents can pick up bags outside the town office off Route 4 and the town's road crew will pick up filled bags from the side of the road on Monday. For more information, call Town Clerk Jeff Bradley at 775-1662.
The Mount Holly Library in Belmont will hand out bags and road assignments from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. At noon, the Belmont Country Store will host a free lunch for all volunteer cleaners and a drawing for a variety of prizes will be had. In Shrewsbury, residents aren't only collecting road side garbage, but they will wash it, sort it and make cash on it, too. Bags, breakfast and route assignments can be picked up at Pierce's Store at 8 a.m. Saturday. Garbage can be dropped off at the town's transfer station, where fifth- and sixth-graders from the Shrewsbury Middle School will sort, wash and redeem bottles and cans for money for their class trips. In Pittsfield, Green Up bags will be collected by the town for the first time, but not until residents fill them and leave them at town hall. Bags can be picked up at 8 a.m. at the town clerk's office. Free muffins, juice and coffee will be served. For more information, call David Hooks at 746-8142.
Students will do the bulk of the work in Proctor on Friday when librarian Donna Smyth holds an assembly at 1:30 p.m. at the Proctor Elementary School following a Green Up Day clean up by third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders during the school day. In Rutland City, Danish pastries, blueberry cake and water will welcome more than 30 expected volunteers at the Northwest School, Northeast School, St. Peter's School and the SUCCESS school Saturday morning beginning at 8 a.m. Volunteers are asked to wear gloves and return bags to where they got them for proper disposal by the city's Department of Public Works or bags can be dropped off at the solid waste transfer station on Gleason Road before 2 p.m. For more information, call Lynne Walsh at 770-8086.
Tinmouth do-gooders can pick up their bags at the Route 140 transfer station from 8 to 11 a.m. and return them to the station, free of charge. Coffee and doughnuts will be provided for free at the beginning of the day and ice cream at the end. For more information, call Doug Fontein at 446-2928.
In West Rutland, bags can be picked up at Town Hall at 9 a.m. until noon. The town will host a cookout at noon complete with free hot dogs. Bags can be left road side. For more information, call Jim Berry at 438-5423.
In Pawlet, bags can be found on the porch of Town Hall at 122 School St. anytime Saturday and be left road side for pickup. For more information, call Clarence Decker at 325-3121.
Omya is once again coordinating Pittsford's cleanup along with the Pittsford Recreation Department and the Pittsford Community Corp. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., residents can pick up bags at the town office and have a lunch outside Keith's Country Store from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Omya will place a dumpster for volunteers to deposit bags at the town office. In Rutland Town, bags can be picked up at the transfer station or town office before noon Saturday. For more information, call Byron Hathaway at 773-8128.
Green Up Day Vermont began in the 1970s by Gov. Dean Davis. In 2007, more than 10,000 volunteers picked up nearly 5,000 tires and about 124 tons of trash, according to previous reports.
Fair Haven, West Haven, Pawlet, Middlebury, Mount Tabor and West Haven Green Up Day coordinators did not report cleanup information for Saturday. Contact your town office for more information.
