It's the 17th year of a local food collection during which you don't even have to leave your house to drop off donated nonperishable items.
The United Way of Rutland County and the National Association of Letter Carriers No. 495 is set to hold their annual food drive on Saturday. Food donations will be picked up around Rutland County by letter carriers as they make their way from mailbox to mailbox along their usual routes.
More than 23,000 pounds of food are typically collected locally by the end of each drive.
The food, nonperishable items and cleaning supplies will be taken back to post offices and distributed to BROC, the Community Cupboard, the Salvation Army, Fair Haven Concerned and the Poultney Food Shelf.
Food collections will take place in the following zip codes: 0570-1/05702, 05733, 05743, 05759, 05765, 05777, 05764, 05156 and 05149.
Food can also be dropped off at the Rutland Post Office from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Donors are asked to provide peanut butter, jelly, pasta, cereal, canned goods, puddings and juices.
No outdated products, home-canned goods, glass containers or perishable items such as potatoes, baked goods, onions or bread will be accepted.
