Drivers can expect delays on Route 4A from Castleton to Fair Haven through the summer.
State contractors will begin work on the road today as well as Hill Road, and traffic will be limited to one lane at the work zone.
Project spokeswoman Francine Perkins said the work is scheduled to last 108 days, starting in Castleton and moving west to the border with New York, then back east along Route 4 to West Street in Fair Haven.
The project also includes about three-quarters of a mile of Route 22A in Fair Haven, starting at the juncture with Route 4A and going north.
Perkins, hired by contractor Pike Industries, serves as spokeswoman specifically for this project, something she said the Vermont Agency of Transportation sometimes requires when a highway project goes through a heavily settled area.
"They do it now quite often," she said. "I've been doing it for three years."
Perkins described the work as a paving project with some reconstruction. She said crews will make ditching and guard rail improvements as well.
The project also includes a new crosswalk and school-zone flashing beacons at Fair Haven Grade School.
On the other end of Fair Haven, crews will remove the jug handle at the Welcome Center, replacing it with a left-turn lane. Perkins said this would reduce the number of lanes drivers cross entering the center.
Work will take place weekdays during daytime hours, with Saturday work if it is necessary to finish on schedule. Work will end at noon Friday for the holiday weekend.
