WHITING — A local man was listed in critical condition Monday following a motor vehicle accident Sunday afternoon on the Shoreham-Whiting Road, according to Vermont State Police.
Police said John Burt, 21, was driving a 2000 Chevrolet Silverado east on the road at about 1:30 p.m. when he lost control of the truck while rounding a sharp curve. Burt's truck angled across the westbound lane and down an embankment where it overturned several times.
Burt was thrown from the vehicle and landed about 50 feet away.
An unidentified passenger fled the scene before police arrived.
Police listed Burt's injuries as multiple cuts, internal bleeding, broken ribs, a cervical fracture and injuries to his abdomen and spleen.
He was taken by ambulance to Porter Hospital in Middlebury but was soon after flown by DHART helicopter to Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington where he was listed in critical condition Monday evening.
Police said speed and possible alcohol consumption are considered contributing factors in the crash.
Anyone with any information regarding the crash is asked to call Trooper Szarejko at 388-4919.
