MOUNT HOLLY — An elderly woman was injured Monday morning in an accident at the intersection of Hortonville Road and Route 103, according to Vermont State Police.

Police said Bernice Wellin, 84, was trying to cross from the east side of Hortonville Road — which is divided by Route 103 — to the road's west side at around 10 a.m. Monday. But police said her 2007 Buick LeSabre crossed in front of a tractor trailer traveling north on the highway.

Leon Towsley, 58, of Charlestown, N.H., told police he tried to steer into the southbound lane to avoid a collision, but his truck collided with Wellin's car, shoving the Buick to the east side of Route 103 while the tractor trailer veered over the side of an embankment.

Wellin was initially trapped in her car until Mount Holly firefighters freed her. She was taken by Mount Holly Rescue to Rutland Regional Medical Center where she was listed in fair condition Monday evening. Police said she sustained injuries to her shoulder and collarbone.

Towsley was uninjured, police said.
