Rutland City Police are puzzling over a shooting earlier this month while the man who was wounded is now behind bars.
Police said they were called to Rutland Regional Medical Center during the early morning hours of June 6 after a patient arrived with a gunshot wound to the lower right leg.
But Detective Sgt. Kevin Stevens said when police tried to interview Alexander D. Barkey about his injury, the 21-year-old gave different stories about what happened to him that night.
In one version of events, Barkey told police he was shot in the Walgreens parking lot on Woodstock Avenue. In another version, he was shot in the driveway of his home on Woodstock Avenue. In both stories, he was shot by someone firing out the window of a dark colored car, Stevens said.
Due to what Stevens said was a lack of cooperation on Barkey's part, the case remains open but unlikely to lead to any arrests.
But while the case against the shooter hasn't led to arrests, Barkey himself is in jail for violating his furlough when he left his home the night he was shot.
"He claimed to be having an unbelievable nicotine fit so he had to go to Walgreens in the middle of the night," said Michael O'Malley, district manager of the state Probation and Parole office in Rutland. "His story changed too many times for us."
Barkey was released from jail in April after violating his probation in 2007. He was sentenced to 72 months of probation in 2007 after pleading guilty to a number of charges including petty larceny, burglary, cocaine possession and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
What will happen to Barkey next is unclear.
Because he was jailed on a violation of his furlough, the Department of Corrections, and not the courts, will decide how long he will remain jailed and under what conditions he will be released, O'Malley said.
