Pawlet to benefit from $85K grant

MONTPELIER — Nineteen Vermont towns are sharing $85,000 in grants to make it easier for people with disabilities to vote.
Secretary of State Deborah Markowitz says the money is to help the communities meet the mandates of the 2002 Help America Vote Act.
Since the program began 119 grants have been awarded totaling $481,538.
The current projects range from $331 to buy lights with magnifiers for voting booths in Plainfield, to $5,000 for a new door and ramp in Pawlet, to $20,000 to install automatic doors and handicapped parking spaces in Burlington.
Markowitz says her office created a trust fund in 2004 to help pay for the improvements so the costs will not be shifted on to Vermont municipalities.
