A West Pawlet man is facing charges after he allegedly battered his way into a former friend's house.
George E. Wade, 24, of Euclid Street, pleaded innocent June 8 in Rutland District Court to a felony charge of burglary and a misdemeanor charge of unlawful mischief. If convicted, he could face a maximum of 26 years in prison and $2,000 in fines.
State police said Wade arrived at the Wells home of James Lamb early on the morning of April 11, and engaged in an argument through a locked door with Ashley Sturtevant.
Affidavits described Sturtevant as Lamb's then-girlfriend and Wade's ex-girlfriend, and also described Wade and Lamb as former friends. Lamb told police Wade blamed him for the end of Wade's and Sturtevant's relationship.
Wade's yelling woke Sturtevant and Lamb, police said, and Sturtevant went downstairs to talk to him. When Sturtevant denied Wade's request that she let him in to speak with Lamb, police said Wade kicked open the door and ran upstairs, looking for Lamb and yelling to him.
Lamb told police that when he heard Wade coming, he went out a second-floor window, climbed down from a porch roof and went to his parents' house, three-quarters of a mile away, to call 911.
Wade admitted to kicking in the door and entering the house looking for Lamb, police said, and that he left when he saw Sturtevant picking up the telephone.
Wade was released on the conditions he stay away from and not harass the other two.
