Jennifer Ramirez said it's going to be a big help when she starts college in the fall.
The Rutland High School senior along with Danielle Lewis of Woodstock Union High School and Claire Cipriani of Proctor High School were honored as GE Aviation Rutland STAR Award winners — with each receiving a $3,500 scholarship.
The three students were eligible for the scholarship as children of employees or retirees of GE Aviation Rutland.
The scholarships are awarded by the GE Foundation, which also donated $500 to each school.
The students, along with their parents and teachers, attended the luncheon and awards ceremony last week hosted by plant manager Dan Fermon.
"You have to be extremely talented to be able to get one of these awards, so congratulations to all three of you," Fermon said, "and congratulations to the parents and congratulations to the teachers as well."
The three students competed against other students of General Electric Co. employees worldwide. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academics, extracurricular activities, community service and personal experiences and goals.
Ramirez of Rutland High School said winning the scholarship was a nice surprise, especially given the competition.
"It's really going to help pay for everything I need," said Ramirez, who will attend Cornell University, majoring in veterinary medicine.
Cipriani will also be going to Cornell, majoring in engineering, while Lewis will be attending the University of New Hampshire.
Also attending the ceremony were parents Doug and Leslie Lewis; Paul and Kathleen Cipriani, their daughter Olivia, and Proctor High School teacher Sara Ricci; Marcelo and Susan Ramirez, their daughter Stephanie, and Rutland High School teachers Raymond and Cathy Lopes.
GE officials in attendance were Sanjay Correa, general manager, Fan Compressor and Combustion Center of Excellence in Evendale, Ohio, and Heidi Janda, plant leader, Regensburg, Germany.
Established in 1984, the GE Foundation has awarded $11 million in scholarships and teacher awards worldwide. The GE STAR Awards are administered by the nonprofit Institute of International Education.
