BERLIN – Five people involved in a vehicle accident on Route 62 Friday evening are still in the hospital, one in very critical condition.

Around 6 p.m. Friday, Berlin Police responded to a two-car crash on Route 62. Their preliminary investigation shows the vehicle driven by George E. Huntington, 68, crossed the center line and collided with a vehicle driven by Kelly Holland, 42, of Barre.

Huntington of Bradford was pronounced dead at the scene, while Holland and four passengers in her vehicle were transported to Fletcher Allen Medical Center and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center – some via helicopter. A 10-year-old girl, also from Barre, was among the passengers.

Other passengers include Carol Rasmussen, 65, from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Robert Gorges, 70, of Clearwater, Fla., and both were listed in critical/stable condition, according to the police report. A fourth passenger, Karen Keegan, 53, of Clearwater, Fla., is listed in critical/critical condition.

Berlin Police were backed by Vermont State Police and other area agencies at the scene that closed a portion of the road for a period of time.

The accident is still under investigation. Those with information can call 223-4400 and ask to speak with Officer Edward Page or Officer Chris Alting.

AS I SEE IT, by Mike "Mainer Mike" Brown.

It's strange how some car accidents results in one or more vehicles being totally destroyed, yet those in the car merely end up with minor scratches. This is especially true in auto racing.

However, this was not the case in this tragedy. What a shame that lives were lost, and five people are fighting for their lives.

It just goes to show you how dangerous the roads can be.
