PLAINFIELD — A car accident has claimed the life of a 17-year-old Montpelier girl.

Vermont State Police say Caidin McKeever died early Tuesday when the Honda Civic she was driving veered off Route 2 in Plainfield and hit a tree. McKeever, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

Trooper Robert Lucas says four passengers were taken to Central Vermont Medical Center but two were released with minor cuts and bruising.

Twenty-one-year-old Kerry Monahan, of Plainfield, was admitted with severe facial cuts and 17-year-old Elijah Mayhew, of East Calais, was taken by helicopter to Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., with chest fractures.

None were wearing seat belts. Lucas says speed and alcohol are suspected in the crash.
