This weekend a new music festival kicks off, and you don't want to miss it. At the intersections of routes 100 and 107 in Stockbridge, this event features all original music in folk, country and rock and will showcase a dozen bands over the course of three days.

My friend Bow Thayer called me a while ago to tell me about it, and you can find a bunch of information on his Web site at www.bowthayer.com.

I checked out some of the bands on the list, and while you might not recognize names, if you do some searching on the Net you will see that it's going to be a great fest.

You can purchase tickets in advance at brownpapertickets.com. Tickets will also be on sale at the festival entrance.

Feedback directly from the fans this week: "... went to see Bogo Guppy Sat night @ Sidelines. It's about time another band has developed in Rutland worth seeing! Haven't really found one since Cell213 broke up! Not quite as hard rockish as Cell but the music is great, keep us informed of more Bogo gigs!"

The Fourth of July goes to the gypsies this year — Gypsy Reel that is. They will play out at Crystal Beach on Lake Bomoseen at 7 p.m. This quartet consists of Claudine Langille, banjo and mandolin, octave mandolin, guitar and vocals; Camille Parker on mandolin, guitar, percussion, and vocals; Graham Parker on the fiddle; and Mark Harding on the upright bass.

The concert is free and open to the public. The rain date will be Sunday, same place and time.

Tonight Duane Carleton will be up at Jax in Killington. I asked him to give me the lowdown on the place and his gig there. Here's what he had to say: "Well, let's see ... it has great food, all kinds of games, a nice new lounge out on the deck, booze, oh yeah, and I play there on Thursday nights from 9:30 p.m.-1:30 a.m. I start on time ... play crowd requests, consistently add new material and I also play my own songs."

So go on up to Jax and see for yourself what it is all about. On Friday Duane is also at The Clear River Tavern in Pittsfield from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

Looking ahead I've been in touch with Roy Book Binder, who will be at the Paramount Theatre's Brick Box in Rutland at 7:30 p.m. on July 23. More on him soon, but for now take a peek at his Web site: www.roybookbinder.com.

… and by George, keep supporting live, local music!

George Nostrand is always trying to keep up with too much to do and not enough time. Somehow he squeezes in his weekly music updates to keep you up on what's up.

Give me some Spin! What's going on with your band, your venue, or your cousin's uncle's brother's band? If it's musical and it's happening in the Rutland area I want to hear about it. Send me an e-mail at localspin@gmail.com. The deadline for the coming week is Tuesday at noon.
