BENNINGTON — A West Rutland man pleaded innocent in Bennington District Court on Tuesday to a felony charge of attempted embezzlement.
In an affidavit, police said that Michael N. Maniery, 26, of West Rutland, had attempted to use the business credit card from his former place of employment to buy almost $6,500 worth of office equipment over the Interne in December.
Staff at Josiah Allen Real Estate in Arlington said Maniery had been fired from the business in February for several reasons including attempting to steal office equipment, police said.
At the time of his employment, Maniery was an office administrator whose responsibilities included ordering office supplies.
Maniery told police he had ordered the equipment but charging it to the office credit card had been a mistake.
Maniery has convictions for possession of stolen property in 2006, grand larceny in 2002 and forgery in 2001.
If convicted of the charge, Maniery could be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison.
