ADDISON — Vermont Transportation officials are warning travelers to expect significant delays when crossing Lake Champlain on the 80-year-old bridge between Addison and Crown Point, N.Y.
The state says a structural inspection of the 2,184-foot Crown Point Bridge last month discovered that steel on the bridge had deteriorated.
Beginning Friday, traffic signals will be used to control one-way, alternating traffic.
The weight limit on the bridge will be reduced to 40 tons. Legally loaded tractor trailer trucks will be allowed on the bridge, but overweight vehicles will not be allowed.
Last week the states of New York and Vermont announced an agreement to replace or repair the bridge beginning in 2013.
