Rutland's Mount St. Joseph Academy announced recently it hired Bjorn Behrendt as its new information technology coordinator with the goal of putting MSJ on the map as one of the leading technological schools in the area.

It is Behrendt's hope to make MSJ "one of the leading technological schools in the area by using free and open-source software, 21st-century tools and Web 2.0 tools like Google Apps," said MSJ development director Kathy Bove.

Behrendt graduated from Castleton State College with a degree in Computer Information Systems and has been working in the field of educational technology since 1998.

He is working toward a master's degree in curriculum and instruction at the University of Vermont.

At MSJ, he will maintain the school's computer infrastructure as well as integrate technology into the classroom.

Good idea- the school has been looking at ways to attract more students and being able to advertise the school as a top-shelf technological institution might garner additional interest from parents. That has been the overarching concept of magnet schools for years and there are a number of success stories with magnet schools that have significantly increased their numbers after offering a specific "hook". The $5000 tuition is still prohibitive to many families but I would suggest that those families look at the possibilities of some form of tuition assistance. There are a number of very giving families and individuals who have contributed to the school so that tuition costs would be more feasible for many families.
