Ski racer from Pittsfield seriously injured in fall from escalator

Cody Marshall, an alpine ski racer from Pittsfield, is in serious condition at the University Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah, after he hit his head falling off an escalator at a mall in downtown Park City on Wednesday night.

Marshall, 26, whose family lives in Pittsfield, was at the Main Street Mall at about midnight when he fell, suffering a head injury, said Tom Kelly, vice president of communications for the United States Ski and Snowboard Association.

“We don’t know the exact circumstances of what went on,” Kelly said. “He was treated at the scene and taken by ambulance to the hospital.”

Marshall is in his third year with the U.S. Ski Team. The B-Team racer was third in slalom at the 2009 U.S. Alpine Championships in Alaska and took three Europa Cup podiums.

He has been living in Park City while training for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

His younger sister, Chelsea, is also a member of the team and is sponsored by Killington Resort. His older brother Jesse, was also a member of the team. Kelly said.

Marshall’s brother and sister are at his bedside today, Kelly said.
