City group names Trash to Art winners

Sustainable Rutland has announced the winners of its first Trash to Art contest and exhibit, which was showcased in downtown Friday night as part of Friday Night Live and ArtHop Rutland.

In the youth category, the winners were: Naomi Merrill, "Trash Chimes;" The Middletown Springs Elementary School Environmental Club, "Mr. Trashman;" and The Boys & Girls Club of Rutland County, "Endangered Animal Sculptures." The youth People's Choice Award also went to the Middletown Springs Elementary School Environmental Club.

In the adult category, the winners were: first place, Jessica Kaminski, "Fits Like a Glove;" second place, Paul Hilliard and Rik Sassa, "Ahead of Myself;" and third place, Rachel Spitzer, "Metal Ties." Kaminski also won the People's Choice Award.

According to organizers, the event was a "huge success." More than 30 artists submitted more than 50 pieces of art. The event was also well trafficked. More than 300 People's Choice ballots were cast by visitors to the showcase.
