WATERBURY — The state Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a "birthday bash" for Vermont's state forests Sept. 26, with guided hikes in six state parks.

In 1909, the state Board of Agriculture appointed Vermont's first state forester and acquired the first state forest, the 642-acre L.R. Jones State Forest, in Plainfield. Now, the state oversees more than 300,000 acres of state forest in 80 towns.

On Sept. 26, hikes led by foresters will be held at Camel's Hump State Forest in Buels Gore; Groton State Forest in Groton; Aitken Forest in Mendon; Mount Mansfield State Forest in Waterbury; Willoughby State Forest in Sutton; and Townshend State Forest in Townshend.
