Work on Route 4A is done.

Mostly.

"They finished all the work they needed to do to be substantially complete," Vermont Agency of Transportation spokesman John Zicconi said last week.

Repaving on Route 4A started in the Castleton village area and went west through Fair Haven to the New York state line, then coming back along Route 4 to West Street in Fair Haven. The stimulus-funded project also repaved a 3/4-mile stretch of Route 22A in Fair Haven.

With that roughly $3.5 million project done on time and under budget, Zicconi said the state has added some bridge and road work in the area.

Up first, he said, is a new membrane on the Scotch Hill Road bridge, which crosses Route 4 at Exit 3. The membrane keeps water and salt off the steel and concrete.

"That was not part of the original project, but while they're there and they're mobilized, this is a $40,000 add-on," Zicconi said. "People should still expect work on this bridge over the next couple weeks."

Workers found sand build-up interfering with drainage in several spots along the project, so the state also decided to add $50,000 worth of ditching. Zicconi said it was largely off-road work and should not significantly impede traffic.

The project created long lines of cars through the summer. Castleton Town Manager Charles Jacien said people were happy to see traffic moving normally again.

In Fair Haven, at least one person suggested the project had people moving a little too fast. Seemingly increased speeds on the newly improved road were cited in a Select Board meeting as a reason to conduct a traffic study downtown and possibly lower the speed limit to 25 mph.
