Yankee protest ends in arrests

VERNON — Four elderly women living downwind of the Vermont Yankee nuclear reactor were arrested Monday afternoon when they walked through the first two security gates at the Vernon reactor and sat down on folding chairs, blocking entry to the plant.

The four women, members of the Vermont Yankee Shut It Down Affinity Group, are no strangers to Vermont Yankee protests, and each said they had been arrested multiple times outside the Entergy Nuclear corporate headquarters in North Brattleboro but never prosecuted.

Entergy Nuclear officials said that the response by the plant's security forces Monday afternoon went well and denied that security had been breached. But the women, wearing tie-dye T-shirts and carrying folding stools and signs, ignored the entreaties of the armed guard at the guardhouse, marched right past him through the second chain-link gate and then sat down with their folding chairs and protest signs.

In about a minute, Vernon Police Chief Kevin Turnley showed up in his cruiser, and eventually three Vermont State Police cruisers showed up. The four women were put in the various cruisers and taken to the nearby Vernon Police Department, where they were processed and released.

At one point, a guard tried repeatedly to manually close the exit gate, but couldn't because it was caught on a metal box. The gates are usually controlled electronically.

Several cars and trucks turned around and backed away from the main entrance to the plant, which declared an internal emergency until the women were arrested and removed, according to John Dreyfuss, director of nuclear safety assurance, who came to the guard station to view the arrests.

Turnley said that the four women were asked to leave and when they refused they were arrested for unlawful trespass. Turnley said they were released with citations to appear in court in late December.

The group was led by Hattie Nestel of Athol, Mass., a former Brattleboro resident. She was the first to be arrested. Others included a 90-year-old retired peace worker, Frances Crowe from Northampton, Paki Wieland, 66, of Northampton, and Ellen Graves, 69, of West Springfield, Mass.

"There is no foolproof nuclear power plant," Nestel said before she was arrested.

"There is no such thing as a peaceful, safe, renewable and cost-effective nuclear power facility," she said, saying the plant should be shut down.

Wieland, 66, the retired social worker and former college professor, said that the only rationale for nuclear power was corporate financial benefit.

"We're downwinders," said Wieland, who said it was a "brilliant" calculated decision to build Yankee so far south and so far east – "it wasn't in Vermont."

Wieland said that the radiation releases from the reactor follow predominant winds — that take the radiation away from Vermont to Massachusetts or New Hampshire.

"We're more at danger than Vermonters are," she said.

Wieland said she started protesting nuclear power back in 1977. "I'm an old Clam," she said, referring to the Clamshell Alliance, which protested the construction of the Seabrook nuclear plant in New Hampshire.

Nestel said she had been watching the plant and realized from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., during a shift change, that the gates were left open, making the plant convenient to a protest.

"People are not looking at Vermont Yankee," said Nestel. "We are casting the spotlight on the danger. We will be breathing in the radiation, but we're willing to risk that."

The four women met beforehand at the Burger King restaurant in Brattleboro to discuss their last-minute plans. They were driven to the plant by a friend, who pulled up and blocked the first gate as all four got out. Another friend accompanied them, but didn't walk past the second gate.

The security guard, who appeared to be armed with a handgun, was heard talking to the women about the benefits of nuclear power, but they were intent on their goal of getting through the second gate and sitting down.

Larry Smith, spokesman for Entergy Nuclear, who also came to the plant gates, said that the protesters didn't get anywhere near the security gate, which is much closer to the reactor itself.

"They trespassed on our property and they were arrested," he said.

Dreyfuss said that the protesters posed a serious threat to the plant and to themselves.

"I'm worried. It's a dangerous thing to do. People are putting themselves at risk," said Dreyfuss, noting that the guards are authorized to use deadly force if necessary.

"It's dangerous, and we had an excellent response," Dreyfuss said.

While police have regularly arrested anti-nuclear protesters, they hardly ever get prosecuted, with county prosecutors saying it would take needed resources away from serious cases.

Turnley, who has been a member of the Vernon department, has witnessed plenty of protests in those years.

"I've seen a few," he said.

LOL.....

They are supposedly against Yankee. They cry it's dangerous and the Radiation is killing people.

And then they walk through the open gates to get closer to the facility...........

Did they forget why they were picketing against it?

Wouldn't getting closer than you are supposed to be an act of someone protecting the facility? Admitting their is little danger?

LMFAO...... It's just proof that some people PROTEST to just PROTEST. While at one protest they forget WHY they are protesting......

IQ < 50!

Yes, they probably did it just to hit the papers. And make a name for themselves and their cause. But the act of marching in and getting closer to something they say is DANGEROUS. Says something in itself... in my opinion.

These ladies should be treated like everyone else and go to jail if the broke the law regardless of age. This sends a bad message about protesting at this or any plant. There have been many negative comments about VT Yankee. This is a plant that has proven it can be run safely and it provides many up and down wind residents affordable renewable energy. While we discusss the future of non military use of nuclear power rouge nations like North Korea and Iran have been testing long range missles and have developed or are developing nuclear bombs. Even though this forum means nothing in the grand scheme of things we as society need to focus on the real issues with nuclear technology. It is criminaly incompetent to focus on the wrong issues of a plant that have proven it runs and has run in the past accordingly to all the standards required and avoid the problem with nations that have destructive intentions with use of nucelar technology.

Deformed children? ROFLMAO Yup! way too many old movies.

I am impressed you type a few abbreviations and suddenly you think you have a handle on technology. ROFLMAO

Well, don't wait for some to cut your power by 30%, do it yourself. I haven't burned a drop of heating oil, since 1973 or since the last embargo and the Odd and Even License plates and Gas lines. I still support V.Y. and I do so with far more knowledge of Nuclear and Radiation than you surly have an understanding of.

GO back to school, Gonzo, get an education, the brain is a terrible thing to waste. LOL

Bruce, the only idiots that would buy your VY downwind $60,000 building lots are ignorant flatlenders that want out of their rediculous cities. And yes, they would deserve it. Let 'em in! Buy, buy, buy! Its better for the economy. Our incomes are down 10% from last year you know.

If you split atoms, you need to dispose of the waste. How 'bout we set up the nuke waste dump in your back yard. No biggie, right? Its clean and green. You like that.
So will your deformed children.
Oh, and Smart Think, I would rather live by candle light and wood then VY. So, cut my power by 30% please right now.
And you call yourselves Vermonters? WTF, OMG, LOL, ect................
I can text too. Aint tech great?!
Einstien quote...."Sometimes one pays most for the things one gets for nothing."
Enjoy your nuke power while its here. We aint gonna build no more. Its way too expensive. I just pray that the idiots dont run the existing plants so long that they self destruct. You better pray too. Your thinking short term. Real short term.
In 50 years we will all be back to candles and wood. Oh, I forgot. You'll all be dead by then. So what do you care? My point exactly. You only care about yourselves in the now. So typical American yellow ribbon bumber crap.

We didn't need to arrest any protesters. The answer is quite simple. Get the names of the protesters, and simply cut off the power to their houses. If they are against the generation of electricity, cut them off from it. No muss, no fuss.
The same with the people who protest against logging. If they don't like logging, take away all wood and paper items from them. Let them use saran wrap for toilet tissue.

Gotta go wash my dred locks now, and then eat a bowl of granola while reading a really good book. Maybe I'll read "Chernobyl- The Worlds Worst Disaster" again.

It seems that Entergy needs to take a look at their security procedures. These four women WALKED THROUGH an OPEN security gate. One of these women was in her 90's, so my guess is, that they weren't power-walking. If I were the director of security at VT Yankee, I would make some serious changes to the front gate security program. The gates WERE OPEN for shift change...the ladies car and driver stopped ACROSS THE FIRST GATE...and the second gate COULDN'T BE CLOSED MANUALLY???? And Mr. Dreyfuss states that they didn't get anywhere near the reactor security gate. How close do you really need to be to wreck havoc in a nuclear facility? At a time where Entergy is trying (and only marginally succeeding) to renew their operating license and show the facility is capable of operating for another twenty years, they SHOULD NOT be putting themselves in the position of drawing negative media coverage by sheer ignorance.

Hi, I'm Dr. Bozo LOL ROFLMAO OMG WTF PhD (the D is for Doofus) Please be sure and take note of all the letters after my name, I'm currently taking an online class for my doctorate in self importance so check back often for more letters! As someone who uses the prefix 'Dr.' in thier screename I figured you'd be familiar with Einstein's theory of relativity, guess I was wrong. Once you google it come back and read what I have to say, it'll be much clearer then. I do know something about fission, and for the number of atoms we split on this planet it is EXTREMELY safe and clean, especially relative to the existing coal and petroleum based energy generation infrastructure we currently have in place. Your uninformed, narrow minded viewpoint is akin to a prolifers standpoint; just because someone isn't "anti-nuke" doesn't mean they believe it to be the end-all be-all to our energy problems. Now log off that truthers website, cut off those dreadlocks, take a shower, and go read a book.......you might learn something.

Since when do the misguided antics of four, elderly, senile, old hippies constitute front page news?

Again the RH flaunts its agenda as real news never sees print. There is a backlash to this agenda. I appeal to other business owners to use alternative media for advertising as I have done.

Soon the ownership of the RH may join the dozens of other bankrupt papers when its remaining advertisers are boycotted by the very businesses that reply on Yankee's safe, affordable power.

So let me get this straight.......they claim to be "downwinders" protesting the relative clean & safe nuclear energy, and yet somehow through all the years of radioactive fog..........they made it to 90 years old!! I'm sure none of these people have ever used any energy whatsoever provided by Yankee. Because that would be, you know, hypocritical. I often get the feeling that integrity is not high on the list for people like this.
