Phantoms cruise past Poultney

In Pittsford, the Proctor Phantoms cruised to a 5-0 victory over Poultney on Friday at Taranovich Field in boys soccer, putting themselves in position to clinch the Marble Valley League C Division title with a win or tie against Arlington.

Keagan McDonnell rocked the crossbar from 30 yards out and Justin Carter sent it right back into the cage to get the Phantoms off to a fast start.

"It was a beautiful goal," Proctor coach Kevin Ratti said.

McDonnell got the next score on a through-pass from Carter.

Carter got another score on a through-ball from Calvin Knowles, making the halftime score 3-0.

Ricky Carroll then scored after McDonnell set him up by making a nice run and Greg Elrick completed the scoring, with Carter earning the assist.

The Phantoms hiked their record to 11-0-1.

Cody Greene made three saves in notching the shutout. Poultney keeper Corey Davenport had 13 saves.

Springfield 4, Hartford 1

In Springfield, Hartford, which lost to Springfield earlier in the season and is locked in a battle with the Cosmos for supremacy in the Marble Valley League and Division II, put it all together Friday in a 4-1 win at Brown Memorial Field.

"This game is immense," Hartford coach Steve Sass before the game said and his Hurricanes played like it meant something, allowing only a late goal on a penalty kick.

Hartford took the lead in the first 10 minutes as Dillon Sass surprised Springfield keeper Jordan Pfenning with a hard shot from outside the 18.

Back came the Hurricanes to score on a nifty give-and-go tally as Sass chipped it over the defense to Rory Skehan chipped it in for the 2-0 lead.

Cole Lutter tapped the ball to Sass who unleashed a shot that flew inside the far post to make it 3-0 in the second half.

Hartford's final goal came on a through-pass from David Devost to Skehan who had lots of room to shoot at and didn't miss.

Springfield avoided the shutout when Jon Kendall connected on a penalty kick with 13 minutes to go.

MSJ 3, Long Trail 2

Freshman Greg Mercier scored two goals to help lead Mount St. Joseph Academy to its third victory of the season against eight losses.

Mercier gave the Mounties a 1-0 lead, but the Lynx roared back to take a 2-1 lead, with Willy Cousseau and Ethan Wang scoring.

Mercier's second goal tied it and John Riker got the game-winner with seven minutes remaining.

"We played very well," MSJ coach Ryan Watson said.

He used two goalies. Jonas Feldhaus made five saves and Ethan Wincowski collected eight.

BBA 2, Mount Anthony

In Manchester, Burr and Burton Academy continued their special season, running its record to 11-1. Etan Edson had the first goal, converting Dan Favreau's corner kick. The second score was an own goal, but it came thanks to the pressure applied by Chris Antonez. Matt Rosenthal earned the shutout with fives saves. Mike Nolan came on and recorded one saves. The Bulldogs have games remaining with Rutland and Brattleboro to complete the regular season.

TV 5, Green Mountain 0

In Wilmington, Scott Hayford scored three goals and Ian Murdock had the other two as Twin Valley raised its record to 10-2. Jared Cipriano had three assists.

Tony Bernard had 15 saves in his shutout.

Woodstock 2, Fair Haven 1

In Woodstock, Colin Hagenbarth had a goal and an assist and Spence Lewis had a goal as the Wasps won to go to 5-7.

The game got a bit out of hand and Fair Haven got on the bus with 30 seconds still to play.

Brattleboro 4, Leland & Gray 0

In Brattleboro, Travis Elliott-Knaggs scored twice while Chad Payne-Meyer and Gray Grandy added the others as Tarique Rashed got the shutout for the Colonels.

Stevens 2, Windsor 1

In Claremont, N.H., Bob Stockton scored unassisted eight minutes into the second half to lift the Cardinals to victory.

Arlington 3, West Rutland 1

In Arlington, Gunner Beach scored twice and Greg Pickering added the third for the Eagles. Che Garcia netted Westside's goal.

Black River 3, Bellows Falls 2

In Westminster, James Greenwood scored a pair of what coach Tony Valente called "dynamic" goals and Jake Covell added what would prove to be the game-winner for Black River.

Greenwood netted a pair of 30-yard blasts that found the upper corner. Jason Garciadealba notched a pair of goals for the Terriers.

GIRLS SOCCER

Leland & Gray 2, Bellows Falls 0

In Westminster, Callie Ginter picked up the rebound following a great save by Tia Billado and buried it into the top-right corner at the 28-minute mark to give the Rebels all they would need. Chelsea Cox hit a cross from the edge of the 18 that hooked into the back corner to ice it in the second half.

BF coach John Broadley lauded the play of sweeper Julie Cermola and middie Kammie Crawford as well as Billado, who made "four world-class saves."

Kiera Capponcelli got the shutout for Leland & Gray.

So. Royalton 2, Rochester 1

In Rochester, Shayna McCullough and Kim Lakin scored for South Royalton and Taylor Benson tallied for the Rockets, her first goal of the season. Royals goalie Ali Hull had fives save and Hannah Domas made seven stops for Rochester.

FIELD HOCKEY

BBA 3, Woodstock 1

In Woodstock, Burr and Burton Academy and the Wasps battled to a scoreless tie through the first half. Then things picked up. Jessica Nutter scored two minutes after the break for BBA, but Courtney Maxham answered for Woodstock, Jesse Davenport assisting.

Emma Provenzano scored the last two goals for Burr and Burton.

Burr and Burton goalie Emily Owens had 10 saves as Burr and Burton had an 11-4 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners. Woodstock used three goalies: Julie Boyd, Grace Amato and Amanda Maxham.

Woodstock coach Wendy Wannop praised Davenport, Sam Harrington and Aria Robinson for strong games for her 5-8 Wasps.

BBA completes the regular season at 3-11.

CROSS COUNTRY

RHS girls second

In Westminster, Stratton Mountain school captured the girls cross country meet with Rutland placing second. Rutland put three runners in the top 10, led by individual winner Mary Kate Cirelli with her time of 18:37. Grace Wright was fourth in 20:03 and Magen Bissell ninth with a time of 20:48

MAU 2, Hartford 2

In White River Junction, Hartford trailed Mount Anthony 2-0 with about 13 minutes remaining, but earned the tie with some late lightning, two goals by Shelby Yee. The first came with 13:30 to play and the second with 8:11 remaining. Teal Wiegand had the assist on the first tally and Kalia Gervais on the final score.

Courtney Andrews and Lilly Taub had given the Patriots their 2-0 advantage with Lizzie Curtin assisting on both goals.

MAU finishes the regular season at 10-3-1 and Hartford at 12-1-1.
