MARLBORO — An East Dover man who says he fell asleep behind the wheel before crashing his car on Route 9 early Saturday morning is facing criminal charges for leaving the scene before police arrived.

State Police say Lewis Dudley, 21, was traveling west on the highway just shy of the Wilmington town line at around 2:30 a.m. when he dozed off and veered off the north side of the roadway at a speed of roughly 50 mph. Dudley's 1995 Oldsmobile Cutlass wagon struck a culvert post, drove over the culvert and struck several trees before coming to rest. The impacts wrecked the vehicle, doing damage to the front end, hood, roof and undercarriage, police said.

But Dudley, who was wearing a seat belt and was uninjured in the crash, was cited to appear in court for leaving the scene of the crash without first identifying himself to law enforcement officers. He was also ticketed for failing to maintain his lane of travel, police said.
