WHITE RIVER JUNCTION- A North Springfield woman denied charges on Tuesday that she was under the influence of alcohol and drugs when she crashed her car while transporting her 2-year-old child.

Jasmine R. Daniels, 28, pleaded innocent in White River Junction District Court to misdemeanor charges of drunken driving, driving under the influence of drugs, careless or negligent operation of a vehicle and child cruelty.

According to affidavits filed with the court, around 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3, a police officer was performing drunken driving enforcement on Valley Street in Springfield when he watched a 1999 Subaru Legacy driven by Daniels go off the road and strike a telephone pole.

Daniels and her child were transported to Springfield Hospital, where Daniels was treated for a chest contusion from the deployment of her car's airbag, while her child was not injured, records state.

Daniels told police she crashed while reaching into the back seat of her car to retrieve something for her child, and as she spoke, police smelled alcohol on her breath and noticed her eyelids were droopy, affidavits state.

Daniels told police she was taking seven types of prescription medications, including Percocet and Ritalin, and had only consumed one alcoholic drink, according to court records. Three hours after her crash, Daniels had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.132 percent, affidavits state. Legal limit for driving in Vermont is 0.08 percent.
