Published: October 23, 2009

A pair of hunters from Fair Haven are facing charges for poaching deer in Vermont and New York, according to state game wardens.

The hunters, Chad Foster and an unnamed juvenile, have been charged with taking deer by illegal means in West Haven and will face similar charges for killing deer I Hampton, N.Y., state Game Warden Robert Sterling said Thursday.

Foster, whose hunting privileges were previously revoke in Vermont, and the juvenile allegedly used their car headlights to illuminate and gun down deer in West Haven on the night of Oct. 15.

The pair allegedly attempted the same thing in Hampton, N.Y., on two prior occasions, Sterling said.

Hey Jay, how about wear one and walk around in the fields at night until they here a shot, at least they will know to duck when the bullets start flying, more then the poor deer did with headlights glaring in their eyes! Just such losers these POACHERS are! And RUTLAND HERALD, at least put a little thought into the headlines before printing it, seems like after all these years you would have a little more of a clue, but you don't, maybe you should try some schooling in journalism!

I think a good punishment for these two morons would be to have the state require them to hold the decoy deer at night.

I agree, this headline is a slap in the face to hunters. "Two Poachers Face Charges" would have been accurate without insulting the competent and descent hunters out there. The headline, as it stands, is just wrong.

Now this guy is a true "hunter":

Man Runs Over Decoy Deer
November 22, 2006

WATERBURY, VT - "Road hunters" who shoot at deer from Vermont roadways are violating the law and tarnishing the image of law-abiding hunters who play a vital role in managing Vermont's deer population. Consequently, State Game Wardens will use "decoy deer," which are taxidermy deer placed to represent a live deer in order to reduce illegal road hunting activity.

While working in Danville on the evening of November 17, State Game Warden Dennis Amsden and deputy State Game Wardens Aaron Mangan and Martin Montour observed a vehicle stop and shine a light on a decoy deer they had placed in a field. The vehicle then drove into the field and accelerated toward the deer and ran into it, sending it approximately 27 feet and destroying it in the process.

Joseph Clark, 31, of St. Johnsbury, Vermont was arrested and charged with felony unlawful mischief, taking deer by illegal means, possession of marijuana, and criminal driving with license suspended.

I disagree with the title of this article. The Herald should have made the title " Two Fair Haven residents are caught poaching". They are not hunters because it is not rifle season. They are not hunters because you can't hunt at night using lights. With a revoked hunting license how can you be a hunter? Is this the Herald's agenda towards hunters? You should be more careful not to present a false picture of what a hunter is in this day of people trying to stop hunting. The true hunters I know have a profound respect for wildlife, safety and the laws that apply to both. Any idiot can find a deer in the headlights and shoot it, but this is not hunting, it is POACHING!!!

I agree with True Vermonter. These are not hunters but criminals. I go out of my way to respect landowners and their property, I pick up other peoples trash while hunting, hunt ethically and make sure to follow all game laws. These are the type of people who give us all a bad name. On behalf of all decent hunters out their I apologize for these two idiots' actions. To the landowners out there please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Thank you.

so the punishment the first time wasnt enough. Prob just had his hands slap. Take his gun away and cut in half in front of him. And every gun he has possession of for the remainder of his life
