MIDDLESEX – Police are investigating a four-car accident on Interstate 89 Friday evening in which two vehicles were wrecked and two people sent to the hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

One person suffered a broken leg in the accident that police say began when a 17-year-old driver lost control of his vehicle on rain-soaked pavement in a northbound lane. The teenager – later taken to Central Vermont Medical Center for treatment of a cut on his face – skidded across the interstate median into oncoming traffic near mile marker 62 and collided with a car driven by a 65-year-old woman from Quebec.

The woman, Olga Shvarts, broke her leg and also was taken by ambulance to the hospital. Police did not provide the name of the teenage driver.

Two other vehicles struck the disabled cars after the initial accident; however, no one in those cars was hurt. Police said the other drivers were Gary Bissell, 51, of Barnet, and Roger Curfman, 55, of Springfield.

Police say speed was a factor in the initial crash and they are continuing their investigation.
